5 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, December 19, 2014 By Andrew Warren TV Media A 'Haven' for Shatner: When geek culture collides, look out! Science fiction and fantasy have become so main- stream that even calling it "geek culture" anymore is de- batable. "The Big Bang Theo- ry," the CBS sitcom about geeky friends doing geeky things, is a massive hit, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Jour- ney" (2012) and its sequels have raked in piles of cash at the box office, and sci-fi and fantasy novels routinely show up on bestseller lists. Now, one of the earliest and biggest icons of science fiction is heading back to the small screen, with a guest appear- ance in one of Syfy's biggest shows. The legendary William Shatner is headed to "Haven" later this season, with a four- episode arc planned for the be- loved actor. "Haven" has been a big hit for Syfy. The supernatural dra- ma, which is loosely based on Stephen King's novel "The Colorado Kid," stars Emily Rose ("ER"), Lucas Byrant ("The Vow," 2012) and Eric Balfour ("24"). Golden Globe winner Shat- ner first burst into the national consciousness with his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the original "Star Trek" series. Since then, he's been a near- constant presence on TV screens. He famously played The Big Giant Head in "3rd Rock from the Sun," starred in "Boston Legal" and hosted "Weird or What?" on Discovery. In "Haven," Shatner's character won't be some small-fry minor character, de- spite only appearing in four episodes. Watch for him to play a pivotal role in resolv- ing the events that occurred in the shocking mid-season finale that aired earlier this month (no spoilers here!). "Haven" already has an in- credibly loyal following, but with a name like William Shat- ner guest starring, it may find itself some new fans. "Ha- ven's" fifth season returns in the new year. The show must go on: It's a show that attracted a lot of at- tention when it was first an- nounced — first for all the right reasons, and then for a tragic reason. Showtime's "Happyish," a dark comedy about the pursuit of happiness, has continued its pre-production, despite losing its star earlier this year. Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Capote," 2005) tragically took his own life shortly after the show's pi- lot wrapped up filming, but af- ter a respectful waiting period, the show's production is mov- ing ahead. English actor and comedian Steve Coogan ("Alan Par- tridge," 2013) will be leading the cast as 44-year-old Thom Payne, whose comfortable life is thrown into a state of disar- ray. With words like "viral," "digital" and "social" now be- ing tossed around, Payne may need to rebrand himself if he wants to stay relevant in an evolving world. It's rumored that she may buy a private island near Australia. Because if there's one thing she can't live without, it's her privacy. After signing a contract for $325 million this week, Marlins player Giancarlo Stanton celebrated with a $20,000 bottle of champagne. Let the road to inexplicable bankruptcy begin! And today, President Obama finalized his executive action to protect undocumented immigrants by signing a "presidential memorandum" during a rally in Las Vegas. 'Cause if there's one thing that always works out, it's a commitment made in Las Vegas. Last night, Sen. Ted Cruz criticized President Obama's use of executive action and urged people to sign a petition called "Stop Obama's Amnesty." Then he was like: "Except as it applies to me, Rafael Edward Cruz, a man who was born in Canada." Yeah, Obama's taking a lot of heat from Republicans. In fact, some are saying that Obama thinks he's an American King. When Obama heard this he was like: "Hey, at least they finally admit I'm American. That's SOME progress, I'll take it. I'll take whatever I can get." late laughs Eastern Travel 3 x 5 William Shatner will guest star in "Haven"
