A fter attending a 2013 alumnae luncheon in Houston, Katy Weaver Smith '81 knew she wanted to support Texas Gamma's capital campaign. At the time, Katy and her husband, Curtis, both Red Raiders, were unsure where their daughter, Ellie, would attend college but hoped she might select Texas Tech. Just a year later, Ellie Smith '14 became not only a Red Raider, but also a Pi Beta Phi new member. Her initiation was a "dream come true" for Katy and inspired the family to recommit to the From Roots to Wings campaign. Katy believes the new lodge strengthens the Chapter and demonstrates the support of Pi Phi alumnae locally and nationally. "I've lived in a lot of different houses, and a new home changes your whole outlook. A beautiful home just makes you happy. I can't imagine being unhappy in the Pi Phi lodge," Katy said. "It will also help with recruitment. The campaign shows how strong Pi Phi alumnae support is at Texas Tech and how much we care about our members nationally." Although Ellie is only a freshman, she's already noticed how the new lodge has impacted Texas Gamma. "When I was going through recruitment, I could tell that all of the girls were really excited about the renovations," Ellie said. "It also helps having so much more space for meetings and studying." During recruitment, Ellie instantly felt at home in the lodge, hoping each day that she would be able to return to Pi Phi. The Chapter stood out among the other sororities because of its wonderful members and its many accomplishments. The enthusiasm she experienced during recruitment has continued throughout her first semester, as she develops great friendships, learns valuable leadership skills, and is pushed to be the best version of herself. Katy also believes Ellie has found her home away from home in Lubbock. "I think she's a lot more confident than I was. It took me a while to find my feet, but she's hit the ground running," Katy said "I knew she would love Pi Phi and Texas Tech. She's me times 100." The mother-daughter duo has enjoyed sharing their Texas Gamma experience and look forward to watching the Chapter's legacy continue for generations.
