3 Lambda Chi Alpha T h e C a m p a i g n f o r A l p h a - D e l t a Z e t a Q: Why did you decide to join Lambda Chi Alpha? A: Several brothers from my hometown of Rolla recruited me, and it seemed like a great bunch of guys that I wanted to be a part of. Without them recruiting me, I probably would not have known about the house. Q: What are some of your favorite memories as an undergraduate? A: My warmest memories are of the comradeship of the members in the house and, especially, the lifelong friendships of my pledge brothers. Q: Why did you believe it was important to support the capital campaign? A: After graduating over 42 years ago, my best friends are my Fraternity brothers. We play golf, go out to dinner, have fun at the lake, and still love each other as brothers. In addition, many of my past and present work associates and clients are fraternity brothers. There are a lot of great causes that want money from us, and I support many. We are asked to support our church, service organizations, other fraternal bodies, and many worthwhile campaigns, but, to me, the one that I feel deepest about are my Lambda Chi brothers. Q: What would you say to someone who has considered supporting the campaign but has not made the commitment? A: If we stop and think about what is really important to us, at least for me, it is the friendships that I made in the five years I was in the house. Q: How will this campaign affect the future of the Chapter? A: The Chapter has to be able to recruit large numbers of top-quality members and there is a lot of competition among the many fraternities on campus. In many cases, potential members don't have a lot to measure a fraternity except its physical facilities. We have to catch up to the top houses on campus in order to survive and carry on our many traditions. Q: What offices did you hold in the Chapter as an undergraduate and later as an alumnus? A: I was social chairman and pledge trainer, which is what we used to call them. I have served on the House Corporation and am an active alumnus. Q: Do you keep in touch with any of your Fraternity brothers? A: I do keep in touch with dozens of brothers and enjoy seeing and chatting with them very much. Q: Where do you work now, and what do you do specifically? A: I retired from Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company after 32 years. I am now an adjunct professor for Missouri S&T, teaching five courses during a year. Q: What are some of your hobbies, and what do you do in your free time? A: In addition to playing golf with my Fraternity brothers, I do a lot of volunteer work for Shriners Hospital for Children. I also serve on a couple of boards and am active with church activities. My wife and I are certified barbecue judges, so we try to squeeze in a few contests each year. We love spending time with our grandchild, only one so far, and spending some time at our lake home, as well as traveling. When there's any spare time, we play golf and even bowl in a bowling league. We stay busy. Bob resides with his wife, June, in St. Louis. June is a Tri Delta alumna of Drury University. They have married twin daughters, Carrie (Tri Delta) and Katie (Kappa Delta), who are graduates of Knox College and Stephens College, respectively. Bob can be reached at bobandjuneberry@gmail.com. Whether it's Cardinals or Royals tickets or lending their house for a barbecue, the alumni have always been there for us. We are looking to improve our advertising efforts and come up with a more diverse set of recruitment events in order to keep things fresh and find more interactive activities.
