Don Slawson '55 entered
Chapter Eternal on July 7,
2014. He graduated with a
degree in political science
and in 1957 founded Slawson
Companies, an independent
oil exploration company,
which now employs more
than 950 people in five states. The company
grew to include drilling rigs and crude oil
marketing among other oilfield services. Don
was also a developer and his involvement in
Wichita's NewMarket Square shopping center
and the Tallgrass community left a lasting
mark on the city's landscape.
"I would think that there would be very
few people in the last 40 years who have
done more for the community and the state,"
said Russ Meyer, Cessna Aircraft chairman
emeritus.
Don served on a number of boards through
the years, including companies such as Cessna
and Intrust Bank and public entities such as
the Wichita Airport Advisory Board and the
Kansas Board of Regents, where he also was
chairman. Of all the things Don and his wife
supported, the Slawson Family Tiger Trek at
the Sedgwick County Zoo was their favorite.
Don is survived by his wife and college
sweetheart, Judy; sons: Craig, Steve, and
Todd; and five grandchildren.
