OLD GILKEY SCHOOL REUNION AND TIME CAPSULE UNEARTHING On Saturday, August 27, there was an all school reunion at the old Gilkey School in Gilkey. Anyone and everyone who attended the Gilkey School were invited to attend. In addition to sharing great memories and reviewing pictures and class doings, there was an unearthing of a "time capsule" which was buried in 1975 by some students. It was to be opened in the year 2000. However, after the school was closed, the time capsule got lost in the shuffle. This year - eleven years after - it was remembered and finally located out on the side of the Gilkey School. The night before a backhoe was brought in and the "capsule" was found. It turned out to be a wooden box which had decayed over the years, but still held its' very old contents. The contents were mostly things which a child might have. There was a plastic egg carton which held small items. A peanut, a toy mirror, a 45 rpm record were among some of the blackened and old items found. It mostly contained something that a young student would give just wanting to be represented. When the crowd gathered it was both curious and rather humorous. The "time capsule" was a history lesson which a teacher must have conceived to teach the youngsters. However, to those attending the reunion it brought back some good memories. That made it all worthwhile. It was truly a special event and a great reunion. Inside, in the cafeteria, people came to have lunch or buy a drink. The best part was when they sat down or in line they met friends and classmates. Some of them had not been seen or heard of for years. Outside and in the hallways, pictures and memory books were displayed and shared. To anyone and everyone who attended Gilkey School, it was a very special day. A day to reflect, laugh, and share "those wonderful good ol' school days!" That made it a great occasion. Yes, another good memory was created. A memory to be cherished by those who were lucky enough to go to Gilkey School. 99
