Liberty Point Declaration of Independence
Marker Location: 145 Person Street 74 | September/October • 2011 More than a year before our nation's founding
fathers gathered to pen the Declaration of Inde- pendence, a group of fifty Cumberland County patriots congregated in late June 1775 to create and sign the "Liberty Point Resolves." They met at Lewis Barge's tavern in Cross Creek to sign the document protesting the actions of Great Britain following the battles of Lexington and Concord. The signers expressed the hope that Great Britain and the colonies would be recon- ciled, but vowed that, if necessary, they would "go forth and be ready to sacrifice our lives and fortunes to secure her freedom and safety."
