THE DRAGON'S WAGON G A M M A P S I C H A P T E R O F B E T A T H E T A P I Fall 2014 (Continued on page 3) E xcitement is at an all-time high after regaining our charter status at the 175th Beta Theta Pi National Convention in August. The need to find a permanent chapter house is now more important than ever. We want to thank everyone who has contributed to the Pride in Our Past, Legacy for the Future campaign. To date we have raised $196,342 toward our $300,000 goal. We have made great progress with our fundraising and are close to surpassing the $200,000 mark, but we need to increase our contributions to ensure the chapter is on a solid financial foundation. So far, 89 brothers, or only 7% of our alumni, have made a commitment to the campaign. With the average participation rate among Greek campaigns being 20-25%, we know we can do better. This summer the campaign chairmen challenged the classes to increase their participation, and I hope you have taken time to reach out to the brothers in your era. See the top five classes on page 3. The chapter needs just over $100,000 to reach our goal, ensuring we find the best house for our active members, and securing our future at Michigan State. If you have been considering a gift to the campaign, now is the time make your commitment. • If you have not made a pledge, please do so now. We know you want to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. • Many brothers have taken advantage of our convenient five- year pledge program to maximize their giving potential. • Any donor who contributes $2,500 or more will have his name listed on a plaque in a prominent area of the new chapter house. During the first few months in the dorms, he realized he didn't much care for the atmosphere and wasn't connecting well with his neighbors. It wasn't until receiving an invitation from a friend from his hometown that he even considered Greek life. "I didn't initially have any thoughts on joining a fraternity when I came to college, but the men of Beta were great and helped make a big university feel a lot smaller." At that time, Gamma Psi was rebounding from a low period, but the members took pride in building up the chapter again and bringing it back to where it belonged. "By the time I graduated in 1982, we were one of the top fraternities on campus. We surged in membership from 40 when I first started to 120 brothers. Being part of that turnaround was an amazing feeling." John graduated with a B.A. in accounting and an MBA in finance. He works in the hotel/ restaurant/hospitality service industry and has held positions at such companies as Hilton Hotels, Panda Express, and Disney. Most recently, John was CFO of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, the oldest and largest privately held specialty coffee and tea retailer in the United States from 2012 until January 2014. "For me, the big takeaway from college was to find your passion. When you're in school, you don't necessarily know what you want to do post-graduate, but whatever your major is, find an industry you're passionate about and find a company that's a good cultural fit for you, that fits your style, and with which you can be engaged. I also learned a lot from Beta about leadership and working with people of different backgrounds toward a cause you all believe in." Gamma Psi received the Outstanding Risk Management Award from the general fraternity at the 175th National Convention. The chapter also won a Sisson Award. • If you know of a brother who has not stepped forward with a gift, encourage him to make a pledge today and raise the rank of your class. We would also like to invite you to celebrate regaining our charter status on January 10, 2015 at the Kellogg Center. The need is great, and the time is now. Please don't wait; use the enclosed pledge form to make your pledge to Gamma Psi today.
