5 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, October 24, 2014 By Andrew Warren TV Media A 'Masterpiece' murder: The list of things that the Brit- ish do well is doubtless a long one, but television dramas must surely be near the top of it. PBS's Sunday night standby "Masterpiece" has a long his- tory of bringing the best of Brit- ish dramas to this side of the Atlantic, and this autumn's season is no exception. With fan favorites "Miss Marple" and "Inspector Lewis" already behind us — compared to American television, British shows have notoriously short seasons — a new, two-part miniseries is next up for the public broadcaster. "Death Comes to Pember- ley" premieres the evening of Sunday, Oct. 26, with the sec- ond and final episode airing the following Sunday. Based on the novel by P.D. James, the murder mystery, which aired last year in the U.K. on BBC One, fea- tures some big-name U.K. ac- tors who won't be strangers to American audiences. The star-studded cast counts a number of heavyweights in its corner: Matthew Rhys ("The Americans"), Anna Maxwell Martin ("The Bletchley Cir- cle"), Trevor Eve ("Troy," 2004), Matthew Goode ("The Good Wife"), Jenna Coleman ("Doc- tor Who") and Eleanor Tomlin- son ("Jack the Giant Slayer," 2013). As a sequel to "Pride and Prejudice," widely acknowl- edged as one of English litera- ture's greatest works, many of the characters in "Death Comes to Pemberley" will be like family to anyone familiar with that story. With an acclaimed novel be- hind it, star-studded cast and a grisly murder to solve, "Death Comes to Pemberley" has the makings of a true masterpiece. The mystery comes to PBS's "Masterpiece" on Sunday, Oct. 26. Star struck: Until recently, it was an untold story: the tale of the women who stood by America's Cold War-era astro- nauts as they became the he- roes of the West, always stand- ing in their men's earthly shad- ows as they took to the skies — and beyond. Last year's non-fiction book "The Astronaut Wives Club: A True Story," by Lily Koppel, peeled back the darkness that had shrouded the details of these women's lives for de- cades, and now ABC is bringing their stories to the screen. "The Astronaut Wives Club" is slated to premiere in early 2015, and with an exceptional cast, it's likely to make a mid- season splash when it comes in for a landing. Odette Annable ("House M.D."), Kenneth Mitchell ("Jer- icho"), Yvonne Strahovski ("24: Live Another Day"), Des- mond Harrington ("Dexter"), JoAnna Garcia Swisher ("Reba"), Dominique McEllig- ott ("Hell on Wheels") and Bret Harrison ("Breaking In") are just some of the actors who are on board. Despite the plans for a mid- season launch, ABC has high hopes for "The Astronaut Wives Club." It skipped the pi- lot stage typical of new shows and was given a 10-episode order out of the box. Though it was originally planned to premiere this past summer, more time can (hope- fully) only mean more polish, and with a few extra months to massage things, "The Astro- naut Wives Club" could be as awe-inspiring as a rocket ship sitting ready for takeoff. Watch for "The Astro- nauts Wives Club" to pre- miere early next year on ABC. His bachelor party was held over the course of the last 30 years. That's how I lost my voice, I was outside screaming, "Don't do it!" Microsoft has announced it will open its first flagship store in Manhattan. It's expected to be just like the Apple Store, but without all those pesky lines in front. It was revealed today that the White House fence-jumper got deeper inside the building than previously reported. In fact, for 20 minutes, he was acting secretary of commerce. I think he signed like three pieces of legislation. When asked for comment, Joe Biden said, "He made it much further than I've ever gotten." George Clooney says that marriage "feels pretty damn great." To which every married guy replied: "Dude, it's been four days. Give it time, George." People are wondering why Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were not at George Clooney's wedding. Pitt and Jolie issued a statement saying: "We're sorry, we couldn't find 18 babysitters." Secret Service director Julia Pierson says agents are allowed to use "lethal force" to stop someone from entering the White House. late laughs Eastern Travel 3 x 5 Matthew Rhys stars in "Death Comes to Pemberley"
