Have you ever considered what life would be like or what would defi ne us if there were no hardships? Now, please don't misunderstand, I am not saying that we need to go looking for trouble, but the fact is that hard times and diffi culties will fi nd us eventually. The difference maker will be in how we look at our suffering. Do we look at it as an enemy or as a challenge to grow and adapt? If we were completely honest with ourselves, we would admit that any strength of character in our lives has been produced by the chisel of hard times. It is no secret that tragedy and sorrow is the seed in which most of the great works of literature, music and human achievement have sprouted. One of my favorite songwriters is Fanny Crosby. At an early age she was treated for an eye disorder and tragically lost her sight due to malpractice. She could have gone throughout life bitter, but instead used her blindness to see within her own soul and out of this creativity wrote hundreds of hymns. Many of which are still sung in churches all around the world. We all would rather live on the mountain tops of life, but there is not much nourishment or growth at the peak of a mountain. It is in the valley where you fi nd the rich vegetation and beautiful fl owers. A farmer will tell you that an acre of bottomland is worth ten times more than a rocky hillside. We must understand that along with our sorrow and grief will come a challenge to turn it into something worthwhile. The words of Job will forever ring true, "But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold."
