Pi Deuteron Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta University of Kansas D rawn in by the quality of the individuals, John Bumgarner '64 joined the brotherhood of FIJI and found a place where men worked together, competed together and had fun together. The leadership he found in the Chapter's officers was a source of strength to John and an example to follow as he worked his way through 133 credit hours, to earn his degree in accounting. "At FIJI, everyone was grounded; they were good, solid folks. I learned loyalty, leadership skills and time management, all of which served me well in my career." John went on to Stanford's Business School to earn his MBA and started his career with Skelly Oil Company, becoming their treasurer and manager of planning. In 1977, he joined Williams Companies and served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Planning for 24 years, as well as serving as President of Williams International Company and Williams Headquarters Building Group. Throughout his career, John remained in touch with his Phi Gamma Delta brothers and maintained an interest in his fraternity's well being. "When I was approached about the campaign, I asked what they were planning to spend the money on. I got good answers, so I kept asking more questions. I thought there must be a way to approach and solve the problem of not having a high enough count in the house to sustain repairs and maintenance. I think the current plan will really help the Chapter compete in the future." The future of FIJI is of particular importance to John, with two of his grandsons now members of the Chapter. "I've been back on campus and it feels like the goal of recruiting good kids has continued. This campaign could transform the house into the best facility on campus. It can be a game changer, putting FIJI ahead of everyone else." "When you get to be the age my pledge brothers and I are, one of the things you think about is giving back. This campaign is an intelligent way to give back to an institution that helped each of us become who we are today. We all have competing demands for our donations, but this campaign deserves serious consideration by everyone." John lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his wife, Mary Ann. They have five children and 10 grandchildren. He can be reached at johnb@bostonavenue.com.
