After serving in the service for two years, George came to the University of New Hampshire and joined SAE as a sophomore. SAE had a good reputation as it wasn't overloaded with just one major, their parties were a good time, and there were also quite a few veterans which was important to George. "This was all in the late '50s. Those were the good days." Of the many good times George had at NH Beta, a few stick out. The pinnings were always a meaningful experience. The brothers, all dressed up in slacks, a blue blazer, and a purple tie, would march down to the sororities to serenade the lucky gal with sweet violets and other SAE songs. There was a different sense of romantic timing back then. With the threat of the Cold War, George remembers many wanted to start families and marry early. "There was a gentlemanly side to everyone no matter how rough their exterior. We had a housemother named Mary who made you tow the line." George acted as social chairman and pledge chairman for two years. He especially enjoyed his role as social chairman, which back then wasn't just about planning parties. "It was the planning and deciding what is appropriate for the different events. People couldn't come to our major parties unless they had a written invite by a brother. My role was to project what the fraternity was really about—brotherhood." Since graduation, SAE has been a strong influence in George's life. "I still have the True Gentlemen creed in my office. I feel the statements in the creed give you a lot to use as a guide, and I still go back to it every day." The creed has helped George in his busy professional life. Today George is a business and government relations consultant, specializing in organizational management and corporate governance with a strong emphasis on ethics and the relationships individuals have with society around them. He is still a partner in Roberts' Real Estate and investment firm, and before that he spent 14 years in the New Hampshire Legislature. George spent six years as speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, four years as majority leader and four years on the Executive Departments and Appropriations Committee. George was awarded the Lions Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment and loyalty to SAE. He serves as president of his class of 1963, which recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. While George understands life at New Hampshire Beta is a different experience today, he knows the undergraduates are trying hard to get back to basics. George and his wife, Margaret Faye Edmunds, an ACW, live in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, and have two daughters. He can be reached at george@pmanh.com.
