the lion's roar Comedy Show moSt SuCCeSSful PhilanthroPy event yet Recruitment Focuses on Quality True Gentlemen W e had a great spring semester with two philanthropy fundraising and membership development events. Our relationship with the National and the University, as well as our reputation with the community and campus is strong. We finished the spring semester in second place overall in the University's Greek Performance and Excellence Program (GPEP). Members continue to emulate the True Gentleman, representing Sigma Alpha Epsilon and UNH well. CHAPTER HOPES TO EXCEED 3.0 G.P.A. Our G.P.A. came in last semester at 2.92. Freshman Alex Febonio '16 earned a 4.0 and Michael Workman '14 earned a 3.9. Scholarship Chairman Dylan Bartlett '16 is working on a comprehensive scholarship plan this semester with all members under 2.7. "We'll break 3.0 this fall," Dylan says. SAEATS PHILANTHROPY PLANNED FOR FALL NH Beta hosted a benefit concert with the band, Academy. The event raised over $300 for Children's Miracle Network and the band looks forward to returning in the spring. Philanthropy Chairman Rick Bailey '17 is working on an event called SAEats, involving campus and Greek donations of Thanksgiving turkey baskets to local families in need. In the spring semester, the chapter put on a comedy show fundraiser, one of the most successful fundraising events we've had. Students from all sides of campus came out to enjoy a few hours of standup comedy. Special thanks to Ben Phelps '12 for hosting the event and rounding up his fellow comedians to perform for us. It was great to see an alumnus publicly support the chapter and we owe the majority of the event's success to Ben. TRUE GENTLEMAN EXPERIENCE BEGINS AT NH BETA The elimination of SAE's traditional pledge program is, by now, pretty common knowledge. It's been replaced on a national level with a new program called the True Gentleman Experience. Our member educators, Joseph Tumber-Davila '15 and Josh Lynde '15, worked very hard over the summer to create a local version that is sure to preserve the traditions and values that were so vital to the pledge process. An annual membership review is another new addition in which each member will be examined and held to very specific standards. If the standards aren't met, the member will be suspended or possibly expelled. This process will motivate members to be involved and dissociate us from any unwilling to do so. Our organization is facing huge changes, but the foundation which it stands on is the same as it ever was. A large graduating class of seniors last year left us with 67 active members this fall. Our recruitment focus was on quality and not quantity this year. With the removal of the pledge process we want to have a solid group of guys to ensure a smooth transition. Alumni are welcome at the chapter house any time. We enjoyed seeing you at Homecoming and are setting up a date in December for brothers and alumni to decorate the house together with Christmas lights for the Light Up Durham Greek contest. Stay tuned for more information. Fraternally, River Whitten '16 Eminent Archon (207) 929-0275 riverjwhitten@gmail.com Parents' Appreciation Event S pring 2014 marked the inaugural parents' appreciation day at NH Beta. The event was intended to bridge the gap between our chapter and parents, and show our families exactly what we do as an organization. Parents enjoyed burgers and dogs on the lawn, watched a couple of brothers receive awards for personal achievements, and listened to short speeches from President River Whitten '16, the vice president, the philanthropy chairman, Dick Hooker '55, and Steve Philbrick '75. It was a fun afternoon and hopefully will reoccur as an annual spring semester event. In May we hosted a parents' appreciation event at the chapter house.
