George, AF1400 Q: Why did you join Lambda Chi and what made you stay a part of the brotherhood? I was a Lambda Chi legacy, as well as a Phi Delta Theta legacy. I think I chose Lambda Chi because of the bond I formed with Wayne S. Keith, AF775, who would become my big brother. He used to get on me about growing up. Upon reflection I very much appreciate his support. We do business together to this date and I count him among my good friends as I know he would answer the call if made. Q: Reflecting on your time in the chapter, do you have any special memories? I enjoyed playing flag football, the camaraderie of watching Star Trek in the "tube room" before supper, playing bridge and serving on the chapter Ritual team. My best memory of serving on the Ritual team was initiating the colony at The University of South Alabama as I went to graduate school there. Unfortunately it later closed. Q: What degree did you earn and what was your career path after college? I received a bachelor of arts and master of arts in American history. I entered the real estate industry with an eye toward attending law school, but I got busy and never looked back. I am not sorry for the decision. I am very involved in the shopping center industry, for which I have received some national recognition and hold a number of professional real estate designations. Q: How do you think Lambda Chi helped you become who you are today? I think the teachings of the Ritual had a more profound effect on me than I realized at the time. If nothing else, the lessons reinforced the teachings of my parents and grandparents. The Ritual's teachings are life lessons to which I adhere to this date. I have always had my LCA initiation certificate hanging in my office. Q: How have you stayed involved as an alumnus? I have tried to support my local chapter financially, recently contributing to the expansion of the Chapter House as well as to the newest renovation project at the house. Additionally, I have supported the Educational Foundation. In July I was elected to the national Educational Foundation board and I am looking forward to becoming an active board member. Leading up to this position, I met with Mark Bauer, president of the foundation, on several occasions, learning more about the foundation, its hopes, plans, and purpose. A couple of years later, he called and said he wanted to come see me again. On his last visit to Mobile, we began a discussion about the mentoring program and my potential involvement on the foundation board. He said he needed a "Southerner." I chose to get involved because of the work of the foundation. Its work to provide direct efforts to brothers wanting to become more involved and the efforts to generally support the Fraternity hit a chord with me. The more I have learned about the work of the foundation, the more sure I have become of my decision to become involved. Q: What has impressed you about the undergraduates you have met? I attended my first foundation board meeting, as a guest, in July 2013 at the University of Memphis. The Steed Leadership Conference was underway and a part of the foundation meeting time was spent with the undergraduates as they participated in conference activities. As the meeting progressed and I listened to these "kids" (undergraduates), I thought, "There really is hope for our future." These guys were phenomenal. The way they thought about the problems posed and the way they planned resolutions to the problems posed was very heartening. I was really glad I got to spend the couple of hours available watching these young men participate in the leadership conference. Tony lives in Mobile, Alabama, with his wife, Toni.
