Seven outstanding individuals in the annals of state prep athlet- ics were selected over the summer for induction into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame (NCHSAA), which includ- ed Cleveland County's own Chris Norman. Coach Norman was an outstand- ing head football coach as well as a well-respected athletic administrator. A native of Shelby, Norman attended Shelby High School before going on to Gardner-Webb, where he gradu- ated in 1984. After three years as an assistant coach at East Rutherford High School, Norman joined Shelby High where he was a successful assistant coach before taking over as head coach, 1998 through 2010. His coaching record for the Golden Lions was stellar at 147-39-1, includ- ing three state championships and a perfect 16-0 mark in 2006. The Golden Lions also won 10 confer- ence titles and five regional crowns under Norman. He also served as Shelby's athletic director for six years as well as coaching men's and women's track and field for several years during his tenure. Norman was the president of the North Carolina Coaches Association in 2011-12 and served four-year terms on both the NCCA Board of Directors and the NCHSAA Board of Directors. He coached in both the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West all- star games and the Shrine Bowl and has worked with the Shrine Bowl combines in the last few years. Today, the coach calls himself semi- retired, but yet he keeps himself quite busy in several lines of work, including working with Paul Foster as color-commentator on Shelby Info Radio Dot Com's "SMAC High School Football Game of the Week Broadcast." Norman and his wife, Charlotte, enjoy traveling and spend- ing time with their grandchildren and dog Jake. Last but not least, Norman is a 'Roll Tide' man when it comes to college football. Norman and the other new induct- ees will be honored during special halftime ceremonies at the North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech football game at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, Saturday, Oct. 18. UNC has des- ignated the day as the 30th annual NCHSAA Day. The new class will officially be inducted at the special Hall of Fame banquet next spring in Chapel Hill. The NCHSAA Hall of Fame is supported in part by a spe- cial grant from GlaxoSmithKline. Chris Norman Coach Chris Norman inducted into NCHSAA If you ever approached him about doing a story about him, he would say "no"! That was former Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County, Ray Hurley's, standard answer every time. Even as he retired after thirty-two years of dedicated service, this man who directed and helped several thousands of kids at the Cleveland County Boys & Girls Club, still said "no thanks". He wanted no stories to be writ- ten about him, just his kids. He was and is still very unpretentious when it comes to giving him any credit or telling his story. He felt always, that he was just doing his job. His humility is perhaps, what makes Ray Hurley so great and so beloved. So excuse us Ray, but we feel very obligated to let some of those thousands of kids you helped know that you've retired and where you are. If it was "just a job" you sure did a great one, but on behalf of those kids you directed and loved for thirty-two years, may we just say, "thank you and God Bless".
