WINTER Hours - Oct. 1 st - April 30 th Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm Saturday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday Closed Student participation in Rockin' in Quartzsite Rock Auction By Linda Ward Five years ago I encouraged Quartzsite Elementary students to participate in Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite an- nual Rockin' in Quartzsite and Rock Auction. What is required for the students to participate in the rock painting? They have to show that they are responsible students, understand the need for teamwork, be aware of the other artists who were participat- ing in the rock painting, and they are to open a savings account with the proceeds from the auction. The last is very important for them. Learning responsibility and teamwork is impor- tant. Encouraging them to save now, at an early age, is a beginning for prepar- ing for their future. So, they work (and have fun doing it), help each other in the process, and begin saving for their futures. What an opportunity! This year we're going to do something different. The rocks the artists will be painting will be smaller, much easier to handle, and therefore more afford- able to a larger group of people. Not everyone has space for a large rock. Even our snowbirds will be able to have room for these! The students are anxious to begin painting. That is what makes all of the work involved worthwhile. They enjoy it and it provides a wonderful outlet for them. I love to watch their artwork evolve into the fi nal product. I love watching them evolve into the person they are becoming. The future of our students is impor- tant. Not just for their families but for all of us. We need to encourage them to succeed. Artists interesting in painting this year, please contact Rain 928-916-4235. WILL RETURN IN THE NEXT EDITION. (so much news and so little space) We know the Food Bank needs money. Do your part… challenge/sponsor a friend, a local business, a family mem- ber. (The other 50% of the net proceeds are going to "End Polio Now," an incen- tive started by a single Rotarian, whose idea has resulted in near eradication of this paralyzing disease. This is why I am a proud to be a Rotarian, Rotarians make things happen.) After the awards, stick around for lunch (free to entrants), the games, the car show, pie bobbing contest, the beer garden & the music… which I'll tell you all about in the next Desert Messenger issue. Now are you excited? The forth- coming Rotary Day in the Town Park on November 8th? is going to make you laugh and play all day. Money raised from games, raffl es & food will be put into the Quartzsite Rotary Club # 27195 General Fund, in which 100% will be used for betterment of Quartzsite and the surrounding area. After 21 years of faithful and honorable service Major Philip Cushman will be retiring from the United States Marine Corps.
