Indiana Gamma Chapter Alumni Support Needed for True Gentleman Experience A ttending the 79th John O. Moseley Leadership School was one of the best experiences I have had as an undergraduate. After becoming Eminent Archon, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to attend Leadership School in Miami and represent Indiana Gamma. I and six other undergraduate members of the chapter were in attendance. The main focus of this year's leadership school was the introduction of the True Gentleman Experience. My greatest takeaway from Leadership School was becoming well-educated on the True Gentleman Experience. The most significant change from this new program is the elimination of pledgeship. With pledgeship no longer part of the equation, recruitment becomes even more vital for our continued success. Fortunately, most of the seminars and classes revolved around educating members about the True Gentleman Experience and how to implement it. I gathered from all of these sessions that this new system can and will work if our entire Chapter is operating on the same page. This means we will need to continue to strengthen our brotherhood and recruitment efforts. Now that there is an increased emphasis on recruitment, we, as a Chapter, will need to adapt our recruiting strategies to sync with the True Gentleman Experience. This new system requires us to initiate new members within 96 hours of signing their bid. With this new policy, the bulk of our recruiting efforts will need to be put in front of the bid to ensure the quality of potential recruits. I believe our Chapter will thrive in this new system of recruiting with the help of our alumni. The recommendations of potential new recruits from alumni always get a special look from our Chapter, and we are counting on these alumni recommendations to continue to come in, especially with the new system. I would like to extend an open invitation to any alumni and their families to stop by the house whenever they happen to be on campus. Our home at 1115 North Jordan would not exist today if not for the outstanding support we receive from our Indiana Gamma alumni. I have left my contact information for anyone planning to stop by the house at any time or looking to talk to me about the Chapter. I look forward to meeting and learning from the former figures in our Chapter throughout the year, as well as answering any questions about our Chapter or the new True Gentleman Experience. Fraternally, Nick Martell '16 Eminent Archon nmmartel@indiana.edu / (219) 781-9028 1969 Pledge Class Reunites, Strengthens Old Bonds A fter graduation in 1969, most brothers in our class said adieu to Jordan Crest Gables for the very last time as we followed our dreams and ventured in different directions. Several months later, in November, we received the devastating news that the iconic SAE chapter house had been gutted by fire. To all Indiana Gamma brothers, the fire represented a seminal event in the chapter's rich history. The class of '69 was the last to live in and graduate from the stately house at 108 North Jordan. It still makes me wince when I see a university parking garage in its place. We felt ready to take on what the world had for us. Some of us served our country in the military, either stateside and/or the Southeast Asia war games in Vietnam. Others enrolled in graduate school. Some married and started families. Sooner or later, we began careers in business, investments, real estate, law, medicine, education, and even logging (RC). Sadly, several brothers over the years have crossed over to Chapter Eternal, or went their separate ways and chose not to stay connected. Contrary to nationwide statistics, a remarkable percentage of our class has been solid family men in marriages lasting well over 40 years. During this time we have told our sons about the very best fraternity, and tried to emulate the creed of the True Gentleman in our everyday lives. Our class was never the best at holding class reunions. The bonds were there, the intentions good, but for whatever reasons, the call to reunite as a class was put on the back burner as life moved us to many different areas of the country. The common denominator that got some of us recently thinking about a class reunion could easily be credited to the SAE classic, Friends. Its riveting words, "the chairs are empty, the last guest has goneā€¦ there remaineth the lingering presence, the ghost of good fellowship rare" echoes more poignantly now than ever before. So, on July 12, 2014, Indiana Gamma'69 rallied in Carmel to strengthen old bonds and celebrate long overdue fellowship that SAEs have become accustomed to. Making the trip back was Bob "Lurch" Munson '69 (California), Phil "Spit" Spitale '69 (Hot-lanta), Ron "Pete" Peters '69 (Oklahoma), and John "Bloomer" Bloom '69 and Denny "Sutts" Sutton '69 (both residing in Ft. Wayne). The Indy area contingent was represented by Mike "Redbird" Perry '69, Jeff "Hilby" Hilburn '69, Mike "Wildman" McConnell '69, Dave "Schu" Schumacher '69, and Bob "Chi C" Kleymeyer '69. Steve "Stevo" Harms '69 was a last-minute scratch due to injuries sustained riding his bike while trying to relive his Little 500 days. If your class hasn't reunited in a while, or is in the thinking mode, just do it. Believe me, it's well worth the time and effort to make it happen.
