17 Defining Moments http://moments.tigweb.org Defining Moments: Discovering our Canadian Stories is a national digital media arts and citizenship project aimed at engaging youth across Canada to explore, express and showcase their diverse perspectives on Canadian identity. From December 2010 to March 2013, TakingITGlobal offered Defining Moments: Discovering our Canadian Stories with support from Canadian Heritage's Youth Take Charge Program. Defining Moments helped strengthen youth attachment to Canada through digital media arts and citizenship, by engaging thousands of young people and citizens from every province and territory across Canada in discussions of identity on a local and national level. Workshops conducted Art contest submissions received Total program reach Exhibitions 28 106 800 39,618 KEY ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDED: • Successful delivery of over 100 arts-based workshops on Canadian identity, reaching audiences in every province and territory, attended by more than 1,200 young people; • Creation and contribution of roughly 800 pieces of artwork submitted to the Defining Moments online art collection, which was viewed more than 4,500 times; • Collection of artist statements to accompany each art piece in the exhibit, capturing the young artists' reflections on their own unique attachment to Canada; • Traveling exhibits showcasing winners, selected by an external jury, in 28 locations across every province and territory, reaching more than 35,000 members of the Canadian Public in total, from Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto to the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse, to the National Gallery in Ottawa. • Coordination of the National Projections event, including panel discussions, a live competitive art competition and an online collaborative panel connecting participants in Toronto, Yellowknife, and St. John's; • Creation of compelling videos and promotional materials to promote deeper youth and community engagement at events, creating awareness and driving participation; • The cultivation and development of a network of more than 50 partner organizations that supported the initiative, deepening connections between young people and youth-friendly organizations within a diversity of communities across Canada. PROGRAM COMPONENTS INCLUDED: • Youth-led workshops running in communities from coast to coast; • A national youth-art contest and • In-person and co-located training opportunities for Facilitators; • Online interactive webinars with invited speakers; • Travelling exhibit and regional events in locations across the country; • An online art collection and showcase.
