8 www.DesertMessenger.com September 3, 2014 LETTERS FROM PAGE 7 Contributed by: Violet Kiss Have you noticed a change in the air? Labor Day has just passed. Fall is a time of change leading to the slowly altering of our Town's tapes- try. Schools have been open, weath- er is (ever so slowly, smile) cooling. And, it's soon to be the season of returning -and new- vendors and snow- birds. At the same time it is a re-opening for the rest of our businesses that have been closed since late spring. It's like an awak- ening, opening of our eyes, so-to-speak, watching our town open its doors and throwing out the welcome mat. On that note I'm going to give some teasers about the upcoming big Rota- ry event on Saturday, November 8th. It's called "Rotary Day". This will be our day, a celebration of people, having old-fashioned fun and getting to know each other more, here and everywhere around our world of Quartzsite, the rest of La Paz, and our visitors. It will be a day of old-fash- ioned games, contests, a run/walk and 'roll' in the late morning, a BBQ in the afternoon, old time games, music, fun for all, and both for kids and kids-at- heart. Been notic- ing more and more townspeople, our se- nior citizens, young families, adults and teens, and all in between, com- ing out and enjoying our quiet, quirky town. Let's keep it going. I'll be giv- ing you more hints and teasers in the next few issues on the fun things and details coming up for "Rotary Day". Our President for Rotary Interna- tional this year (2014-2015) is Gary C. K. Huang, from Taiwan. He has cho- sen this to be his slogan for the year: "Light Up Rotary". He is urging all Rotary Clubs globally, and that means all 34,000 Rotary Clubs, to participate in Rotary Days for our community to use it as an opportunity to strengthen all of our relationships as people, with our institutions and create an impact around the globe. Well, we decided to do our part, as one of 34,000 clubs, to do just that. Our event to bring our community to- gether for concerted fun and spending time together will also benefi t us here and internationally. Psssst, I'm let- ting a little "leak" get out now and you can tell EVERYONE! Our run/walk, rock and roll portion of the event will be split between End Polio Now (our major International eradication of po- lio project), and our very own, whom we proudly support, the Quartzsite Food Bank! I will make myself avail- able to serve on boards that I feel could use my skill set. I will continue to work for the youth of our community, and to create opportunities for them. Because it's about something bigger than me. My challenge to whomever is sitting in those council seats come November is to remember that it's not about who you like, or don't like. It's not about making friends. It's about doing what's right for the right reasons. And my challenge to ev- eryone else is to fi nd a way to serve your community. Attend council meetings, know the issues, get involved. Everyone has something to offer. Find a cause that means something to you and donate an hour of time. Sometimes, even just hold- ing the door for someone is enough. Just do something. Get involved. Leave each place a little better than you found it. Because that is what it's all about. Monica Timberlake Proud Resident of Quartzsite FOOD BANK GRATITUDE Thank You To The Lutheran Cov- enant Church for once again help- ing the Food Bank.
