Paul Winer Comic Storm destroys Quartzsite Business Chamber office SEE CHAMBER PAGE 16 By Joanne Winer Volunteers Cee Carnevale and Cheri Prutch had just left the Business Chamber offi ce at 2 p.m. last Thursday and no soon- er got home than Cee got a phone call from Q-Check Shell station. Ruben from the Post offi ce had let them know to call Tony to let him know that the roof had just blown off of the Chamber offi ce just across the road. The Fire Dept. came and helped se- cure the roof that was left and put tarps over the huge gaping hole at the front of the building, where the roof had peel off and was all crumpled up around the pole at the east side of the building facing the post offi ce. Within minutes, the inside of the building was drenched from the fi erce rain. The water destroyed most of the bro- chures, maps and booklets that were in the front of the building, and the side wall started coming away from the building. Volunteers Tony and Cee and their son Paul hurried down to the building and started putting tarps over all the computers and printers that are the mainstay of the offi ce, being used constantly to print out sched- Celebrating Our ules, maps, etc. that are mailed out all over the country to those looking for information. Many people stopped by during the next few days, some just to look at what had happened and others to offer their help. John & Cherrie Prutch were there almost every day helping out. Roy Aus- tin from RJK Construction helped shore up the walls and brought his trailer over to put the garbage in. His crew will also demolish the old trailer and get it out of the way. State law gives the counties fi ve business days, until the end of Wednesday, September 3, to verify and process the remaining early and provisional ballots. La Paz County published the fi nal unoffi cial totals Thursday afternoon. Quartzsite Precinct 58 (north) had a voter turnout of 36.52%. Quartzsite Precinct 64 (south) had 26.38% turnout. TOWN COUNCIL: 10 candidates ran for 4 four-year council seats. Robert St. Germain ran unopposed and was elected to fi ll a two-year term. Two council incum- bents who were seeking reelection, Michael Jewitt and Norma J. Crooks, were defeated. Parker Pioneer reports none of the 8 remaining candidates received 50% + 1 of the votes to move on to the November election. However, in an email to SEE PRIMARY PAGE 15
