September 3, 2014 www.DesertMessenger.com 13 The Smoke Shop Red Building - Near Desert Gardens RV Park Entrance qUARTZSITE, ARIZONA SEASONAL HOURS 6:30AM - NOON MONDAY THRU FRIDAY CLOSED SATURDAY AND SUNDAY The weekend of July 26th, McDonald's restaurants throughout greater Phoe- nix, Yuma and northern Arizona gave away free backpacks for families whose children were heading back to school. When this was posted on Quartzsite Chatter by one of our local residents Gene and Maggie Ross headed down to the local McDonald's for lunch and to hopefully speak with the Manager, Kirk Davies, to see if the children of this community could benefi t. Kirk explained that each McDonald's is only issued 100 backpacks and that it was fi rst come, fi rst serve. He told Gene that if he would return at 3:00 PM, he would be happy to give what was left at the end of the day. At 3:00 PM Gene arrived and was given a box of backpacks. When opened, there were 35 new black packs ready to be given away to Quartzsite kids. On August 1st the town was invited to the Community Picnic at the commu- nity center. This was a great oppor- tunity to pass out backpacks and 25 happy smiles left that day, ready for elementary school, high school and even a few home school. The remain- der were delivered to the elementary school. We are happy to have McDonald's and Kirk as a part of our Quartzsite com- munity and wish to give a great big THANK YOU for his and McDonald's generosity.
