Page 4 S o many people have fond memories of Sigma Chi Derby Days: the competition, the fun, the camaraderie, the philanthropy and, of course, the great sororities that participate. But the attitude of University officials toward these kinds of events has definitely been tempered over the years, driven by a number of factors: oversaturation of philanthropic events, new Panhellenic sorority standards of behavior and competition, busy student workloads, and increasing emphasis on gender consciousness. Alpha Epsilon is working closely with the Office of Greek Affairs to ensure that we can hold on to our strong tradition of this uniquely Sigma Chi event, while adapting to the contemporary needs of students and administrators. We are in discussions now to set a new foundation for Derby Days, including limiting it to a one-day event and communicating with Panhellenic in our planning regarding content and using the event to promote Sigma Chi's renewed values- based commitment, which is strongly endorsed by the administration. The international Fraternity is in full support of continuing this rich Sigma Chi tradition and has provided Alpha Epsilon (along with other Sig chapters) a set of guidelines to help the Derby Days experience be a positive one for all involved by making it alcohol free, gender sensitive, inclusive, well-planned, and focused on philanthropy. As a Chapter, we want to use Derby Days as another example that shows the University and student body a newly transformed Sigma Chi. We are trying to rebrand ourselves and want everyone to know that we no longer tolerate any activity or mentality that demeans or degrades people in any way. The sole purpose of the "new Sigma Chi" is to promote the ideals of friendship, justice, and learning. We are a crucial part in UNL's history and plan to continue that tradition. Derby Days is meant to bring the student body together to put aside any differences and to simply help others. Derby Days is a tradition that has helped foster meaningful relationships within the UNL community and to create awareness for various charities. We will emphasize this going forward, accepting change for the good. We hope that our discussions with the various stakeholders in Derby Days, Greek Affairs and Panhellenic, in particular, are successful, and we hope to launch a new and improved Derby Days at UNL this fall. DERBY DAYS REBOOTED AND REVIVED "As a Chapter, our desire is to see Derby Days once again become yet another statement to the Student Body and the Administration that this is a transformed Sigma Chi." -Pro Consul Joel Girouard '14
