4. Emerging Mobile Platforms and Strategies
Many of the participants who attended the event represented organizations who
were in the early stages of developing a mobile strategy or mobile platform. As such, we
featured speakers who were at various levels of exploring mobile technology and
engagement. We had representatives from Engineers Without Borders Canada, Jane
Goodall Institute, Journalists for Human Rights and A.K.A. New Media discuss the potential
and challenges of using a mobile platform to enhance their programs, and some tools to
help non-profits realize a successful mobile strategy.
Case Studies
MyEWB 2.0, Engineers Without Borders Canada
MyEWB has been Engineers Without Borders
Canada's online platform for over eight years and
has been used as a platform to unite their
community and to promote learning and
discussion. Recently, EWB partnered with
TakingITGlobal to release a new version of the
myEWB platform featuring a new look, vastly
improved group pages and a stronger foundation. As the organization continues to update
and tweak the platform, the EWB representative stated that they are looking at which
improvements they should make from a behavioral psychology lens as opposed to a
design lens. In the next iteration of the myEWB platform, EWB hopes to integrate a
mobile component to their platform, find a way to go beyond "clicktivism" to the next
stage of engagement and activism and reinforce learning behavior amongst its users.
