He is seen here with Fifth District Deputy Grand Master Jim Burch. — Johnny Reynolds Wilbur Garner photo ELIZABETH CITY — Members of Eureka 317 re- cently gathered at the Museum of the Albemarle here to view the circa 1872 Masonic apron worn by former member William Crawford Dawson. Dawson was a member of Pas- quotank 103 and a charter member of Eureka 317 chartered in 1872. Eureka Lodge and the Grand Lodge of North Car- olina donated the funds to conserve the apron. After clean- ing and protective services are completed, the apron will be displayed in the Museum's main gallery. William Dawson, born in Elizabeth City in 1831, at- tended local schools and became the city's first photogra- pher. During the Civil War, Dawson served with the "State Guards," later called Company L, 17 th North Carolina Regi- ment. e regiment fought during the Battle of Roanoke Island in February 1862.
