ByRonaldBlum TheAssociatedPress Buttheendoftheridecame at the exact same point as four years ago: with a loss in extra time in the World Cup's round of 16. Belgium scored twice in ex- tra time then held on for a 2-1 win Tuesday. "It's heartbreaking," goal- keeper Tim Howard said. "I don't think we could have given it more." Howard, playing the finest game of his career, stopped a dozen shots with his legs and arms to keep the Americans even through regulation and force an additional 30 min- utes. He wound up with 16 saves — the most in the World Cup since 1966. Before exiting, the U.S. showed the spunk that won America's attention. Julian Green, at 19 the youngest player on the U.S. roster, stuck out his right foot to volley in Michael Bradley's pass over the defense in the 107th min- ute, two minutes after enter- ing the game. The Americans nearly tied it up in the 114th, when Clint Dempsey peeled off the ball and was fed by Bradley on a free kick, but he was stopped point-blank by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. At the final whistle, the U.S. players fell to the field in their all-white uniforms like so many crumpled tissues. "I think they made their country proud with this per- formance," coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. The Associated Press DETROIT Rick Porcello pitched a four-hitter for his second straight shutout, lead- ing the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Oakland A's on Tuesday night. Porcello (11-4) only had one career complete game before blanking the Rangers on June 26, but is now the first Tigers pitcher since Jack Morris to throw back-to-back shutouts. Morris threw three in a row in July 1986. Porcello is now 3-0 with 24 scoreless innings over his last three outings. He became the first pitcher since Baltimore's Jeff Ballard on Aug. 21, 1989, to throw a shutout without a walk or strikeout. By Howard Fendrich The Associated Press LONDON Rafael Nadal ran out of comebacks at Wimbledon, losing to a brash, big-serving, between- the-legs-hitting 19-year-old kid who might just be a future star. Maria Sharapova, somehow, seemed on the verge of a turn- around despite a flurry of un- forced errors, saving six match points before finally succumbing on the seventh with — what else? — a missed shot. And in the most striking sight of a memorable day of depar- tures by past Wimbledon champi- ons, Serena Williams couldn't get the ball over the net in a doubles match with her sister Venus, stop- ping after three games because of what was called a viral illness. All in all, Tuesday was chock- full of significant events, and the most noteworthy winner had to be 144th-ranked Nick Kyrgios of Australia, who used 37 aces and a have-no-fear approach to beat Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 for a quarterfinal berth. "I was in a bit of a zone out there," said Kyrgios, the lowest- ranked player to beat the No. 1 man at any Grand Slam tourna- ment in 22 years. "You've got to believe you can win the match from the very start, and I definitely thought that," the 6-foot-4 Kyrgios said. The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO A federal ap- peals court says it will reconsider Barry Bonds' felony conviction for obstruction of justice. The 9th Circuit Court of Ap- peals ruled Tuesday that a spe- cial panel of 11 judges will review a 2011 jury verdict finding Major League Baseball's all-time home run leader guilty of giving evasive testimony to a grand jury investi- gating elite athletes' use of perfor- mance-enhancing drugs. Arguments have been sched- uled for the week of Sept. 15 in San Francisco. A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit last year upheld the conviction, which stems from a rambling answer Bonds gave in response to a question about whether he received injections from anyone other than his doc- tor. Bonds has already served his sentence of 30 days' house arrest and paid a $4,100 fine.
