THe Alpha Iota messenger a publication for alumni of alpha iota H alpha Gamma rho Summer 2014 More Than $530,000 CoMMiTTed froM Generous aluMni Additional Support Needed for Construction to Commence rebuildinG on a Proud PasT o n behalf of the alumni leadership of the Rebuilding on a Proud Past campaign for Alpha Iota, we want to thank all of you who have committed to our project. We would not be where we are without your involvement. It is gratifying to have 106 Alpha Iota alumni, collegians, and parents step forward with generous financial support. To date, we have received gifts or pledges totaling $538,000 toward our $1 million goal. Because of this generous support, we have met the goal set we set for purchasing land for our new Chapter House—$500,000; however, after looking at properties throughout the past year, we have found that acquiring a piece of property near campus is not only difficult, but will be more costly than our original plans. Securing the funds for the land is a major part of this campaign, and we need the help of all Alpha Iota alumni in order to purchase the right property for the future Chapter House. There is no specific timeline for the commencement of the second phase of our campaign—obtaining funds for the construction of the new 10,283-square-foot Chapter House. Our goal is to purchase a property and have building plans set once we have reached our $1 million goal. the board is committed to this endeavor and we need your continued support to keep our momentum going. This project must have the dedication of all alumni to raise the funds necessary to reach our goal. Our new Chapter House will be one that all Alpha Iota members can be proud of. It will have multiple study areas (private and group settings) an up-to-date computer lab, a social area for events, a private Chapter room, HVAC throughout, suite rooms that have individual bedrooms along with a restroom for the suite, and a small common area. We will also have a commercial kitchen and dining room for the entire membership to enjoy meals together. The new house will also have a fire-safety sprinkler system and security features that will make our state-of-the-art home safe for our undergraduate brothers. Many brothers have generously stepped forward with gifts and pledges averaging $5,000 over five years. Just think, $84 per month over a five-year period totals $5,000. If only 25% of our alumni base would make a commitment at this level, we would have sufficient resources to fund the entire project. We ask that you reflect on what Alpha Gamma Rho means to you, how it helped develop you professionally, and socially, and the lifelong friends you have because of your connection to Alpha Iota. Please help us keep the momentum going by using the enclosed pledge card and envelope to return your gift or pledge today. The campaign is structured so every brother can show their support at any level, and we look forward to your support. Thank you for your loyalty to the Alpha Iota Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho. "I wasn't much for going to school just to go to school," said John Paul. "The support of my friends and fraternity brothers helped me realize the value of my education and strive to complete it." He not only finished, but he earned a BSA in agricultural economics in 1976. He now owns and operates Pendergrass Cattle Co., Inc., a stocker/feeder cattle operation located in the Arkansas River Valley, with his father. "AGR helped me realize that I can take a great deal of pride in my occupation, and without them, I probably would have never realized the opportunity to do so." Eric grew up hearing stories from his dad, mom (an AGR Sweetheart), Cissie, and John Paul's friends about Alpha Iota, but it wasn't until he met a few older members at UA that he understood the shared values everyone had and the sense of home AGR provided. "We would all work together to achieve a goal, whether it was fun, professional, or otherwise," said Eric. "We really influenced one another and all strived to make each other achieve our highest potential." (Continued on page 3)
