tHe Centennial Campaign For gamma pi F irst impressions made a big impact for Richard Stark '71 in his decision to join Delta Tau Delta. He respected the brothers of Gamma Pi from the moment he met them and it was the first chapter house he visited during recruitment. Richard earned his bachelor's degree in industrial administration, and was proud to be part of the chapter when they took home the Hugh Shields award for the first time his senior year. Since that time, Gamma Pi has won the award more than any other Delt chapter in the U.S. After graduation, Richard moved to Chicago and became a member of the Chicago Board of Trade and later served on their board of directors. He moved back to Iowa for 20 years and today lives in Florida. He has been on the Chicago Board of Trade for nearly 45 years. Richard believes that Delta Tau Delta gave him "a lot of the basics in college life that you didn't learn out of the books, like the social aspects of becoming an adult. There are the simple things that you take for granted, like table manners and interactions within the brotherhood, and learning how to give and take with your fraternity brothers." These skills acquired as a Delt, beyond the normal college experience, have helped Richard in his personal and professional life. As evidenced throughout the history of our nation's leaders in business and politics, Greeks are represented in high numbers. "There is something about the Greek system that is teaching young people skills that serve them above and beyond the norm," Richard said. "My advice to the men of the chapter is to enjoy your experience and learn from it. Interact with alumni and take advantage of the system in order to glean the best possible skills you can to become a great leader." Richard has reengaged with the chapter in support of the Honoring Our History, Building Our Future campaign. "I am indebted to Gamma Pi for the things that I learned and some of the successes that it has brought me." When Richard visited campus recently for an event, he was impressed by the quality of the active members. "I remember thinking, wow, if these are the guys that are involved today, they've really taken it up a few notches from when I was there!" Richard is proud of the Delt name and brand on campus, and by giving back he will help sustain the chapter. "In building a new Shelter, I think it will add to the experience of the brothers and help attract quality young men," he said. Richard encourages alumni to participate in the campaign and consider their own Delt experience. "If your time in Gamma Pi made an impact on your life, that is a good reason to help other young men have the same kind of experience you had. It's our opportunity to set an example for future generations of Delts at Gamma Pi. The easiest way is to get involved directly with the campaign and contact other classmates. At a minimum, make a pledge and give a gift." Richard lives in Boca Raton, Florida with his wife of 43 years, Joan. The couple has five d a u g h t e r s , a n d s p e n d s t i m e w i t h t h e m i n Iowa. Richard enjoys playing golf, and can be contacted at richardandjoans@aol.com.
