Payson, Arizona I plunked down my folding chair in the shade by my camper at 4:00 in the afternoon. Time for my afternoon tea, I thought, and a home-made, cran- berry, apple and oat scone smeared with chunky peanut butter. I looked forward to it, this simple pleasure. While I ate, I enjoyed the expanse of the large, green park where I attended a free, outdoor concert last night, a weekly occurrence on Saturday nights during the summer. For me, a reward for the hot, HOT, four-hour drive from Quartzsite earlier in the day. "How contented I am," I thought, and "What could be better than this?" It is blissfully quiet here with only an occasional walk- er doing laps around the park and its beautiful lake -- all ages of people whom I admired for their effort to exercise. Soon a couple of girls appeared to be placing base markers at measured distances on the green. They were fol- lowed by perhaps two Spanish-speak- ing families, or maybe it was a Father's Day gathering of grandparents, their grown children, and their grandchil- dren, the youngest appearing to be about three. Everyone participated in the game of kickball, a game I remem- ber loving as a kid -- racing into dinner and gobbling down my food; so I could rush back to the game, which only end- ed when it was too dark to see the ball. (I had the same passion for jump rope, especially double dutch and fl ies.) I watched the game (still going on as I write): The younger children were the "pitchers" while the three-year old just wandered around.
