PICNIC FROM PAGE 16 Evelyn Walters (mother of Patricia and Jackie), and the McDaniels (parents of Jody) brought two big wash tubs full of iced soda pop. Angie Scott (mother of Frank and Vickie) brought home- baked cookies as did Virginia Under- wood, and I baked up two sheet cakes topped with a toasted honey-coconut topping. Jim Datig's grandfather sent over several Blythe-grown sweet watermelons. The end-of-school-year picnic of 1953 was a huge success and enjoyed by all. As I look at the pic- tures of that day, I smile, remembering the children squealing with delight. Whether it was the H-bomb, water, or whatever, the mothers of Quartzsite were grateful that we were spared the awful consequences of the dreaded disease of the 1950s. Spanish, but laughter is the same in all languages. I was touched when I saw a father stoop down to the batter's level to impart hints for success and another time when he scooped up the smallest child as he ran to home base, the child laughing in his arms. As I fi nish my tea and prepare to leave, the families are still playing, no doubt looking forward to the family picnic awaiting them at the end of the day. Yes, it was Father's Day, and it was the way it was meant to be. It all reminded me of one of my favorite poems: "Happiness" by Carl Sandburg I asked the professors who teach the meaning of life to tell me what is hap- piness. And I went to famous executives who boss the work of thousands of men. They all shook their heads and gave me a smile as though I was trying to fool with them And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out along the Desplaines River And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees with their women and children and a keg of beer and an accordion. My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. ~ Clarence B. Kelland Jane's book is WANDERINGS: Living the Ordinary Extraordinarily (Stories from the Road).
