38 W W W.thejeWelrybook.CoM Drop It Low Statement necklaces have enjoyed the spotlight for a few years now but rest mainly in the costume/fashion space, as the cost of precious, heavy, ornate necklaces is too prohibitive for most consumers. Now bib necklaces are losing ground to the latest big trend: the long, substantial pendant. Perhaps it's the stabilization of the price in gold or renewed interest in vintage and estate pieces. Or maybe it's the recent change in fashion silhouettes: less body-con, more draping – long pendants are particularly flattering and noticeable when worn over tunics or peeking out of a voluminous coat. Chains should be at least 30" long with a pendant that has some weight to it in order to achieve the look. And, to continue the common theme of "anything goes" when it comes to materials, this is a category where high/low mixes of base and precious make a real impact. Carved stone, wood, medallions, symbols and messages all have a place here, especially since this style often is associated with amulets and talismans. So, as you plan your strategy for Market Week, keep in mind that there's not just one look that all of your customers will buy into. They are looking for ways to express a unique point-of-view, so that means allotting a certain budget to categories that may veer away from your tried-and-true classics. It's all about under- standing your customers' taste level, and finding pieces that surprise and delight that sensibility. Remember that trends have a life cycle that often span years, even a decade, so investing in new styles doesn't mean they have an expiration date. In fact, I didn't dedicate a section to rings because everything that was big in 2013 – hand jewelry, midi and pinky rings and major cocktail/statement rings – is still going strong!
