MAY 7-13, 2014 UCW 9 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM ERINN CRIDER, Staff Writer. COM- MENTS? Editor@upandcomingweekly. com. 910.484.6200. County GOP Celebrates an Icon at Ronald Reagan Dinner by ERINN CRIDER Over the years, the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan, has become far more than a man. He is a symbol of an era and of the Republican Party. He is known for his grace under tremendous stress, such as an assassination attempt, and for leading the nation to prosperity through tax reformation. The official White House website summarized Reagan's years as bringing the nation a "restoration of prosperity, and [bringing] the goal of peace through strength … within grasp." The Cumberland County GOP is a local grass roots organization that is striving to shape the community one election at a time. The group has a simple, though ambitious mission. They wish to "elect Republicans to all levels of government, from the local school board to all county, state and federal offices." One of the ways that they work towards achieving the goals is with the annual Ronald Reagan Dinner. This event not only raises money to support Republican campaigns, it also acts as a way for like-minded community members to gather and connect. Communication is always a challenge in large organizations, and with more than 50,000 registered Republicans in the area, it comes as no surprise that getting the word out about this dinner isn't as simple as mailing out flyers. Inadequate communication can extend to candidates and campaigns. "A challenge for the party and for candidates is that many people only know the candidate through print. People may have seen a commercial or something, but that is all scripted. This is an opportunity to really hear the people who will most likely be elected as our leaders in their own words. We are open to anyone who wants to come and really hear the candidates, regardless of party. We are open to everyone," says Linda Devore, most recent chair of the county GOP. Two stellar statesmen, now serving under Gov. Pat McCrory, will be guest speakers at the dinner. Ed Goodwin, former body guard to President Reagan and currently the Director of the N.C. DOT Ferry Division, will present a salute to President Ronald Reagan. Ilario Pantano, Director of the N.C. State Division of Veteran's Affairs, will present a salute to veterans. Tickets for the Reagan Day dinner are $50 per person. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The silver package costs $250 and includes four tickets, and recognition n the dinner program and on signage. The gold sponsorship is $500 and includes a table of eight, recognition in the dinner program and on signage, and access to the VIP reception. The Platinum sponsorship, costs $1,000 and includes everything in the previous packages with the additional perk of seating for two at the head table. Tickets are available online at http://cumberlandgop.com/ reagan-day-2014/?action=evregister&event_id=1. It should be noted that North Carolina Law requires political committees to report the name, address, and profession and name of employer for all contributors. The dinner will be held on Thursday, May 15, at the Freedom Christian Academy, which is located at 3130 Gillespie St. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. There will also be speeches made by candidates for the US Senate and other republican candidates. All proceeds for this event support the Cumberland County Republican Party and the 2014 candidates. For more information visit www.cumberlandgop. com or call 584-1633.
