APRIL 30 - MAY 6, 2014 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CUMBERLAND The Cumberland County Department of Social Services will host the ninth annual Senior Health Fair May 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first floor of the DSS building, 1225 Ramsey St. The fair is in observance of Older Americans Month and this year's theme is "Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow." There will be over 35 vendors present with information about resources and services available for senior citizens in the community. There will also be entertainment, music, snacks and door prizes. "We want senior citizens to know more about how to continue to be safe today and healthy tomorrow," said Makkita McKoy, General Services Social Work Supervisor II. "Come join us at the Department of Social Services for information and fun with our staff and the vendors." For more information, contact McKoy at 910-677-2822. www.co.cumberland.nc.us Sewer service within the Overhills Park Water and Sewer District will soon become a reality after the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to fund the project. The commissioners, acting as the governing board for the water and sewer district, unanimously approved a resolution accepting the USDA funding conditions during a meeting April 14. The project is expected to cost approximately $3.4 million. A USDA Rural Utilities Services grant will cover $2.5 million. The county will also receive an $819,000 Rural Utilities Services 40-year loan and contribute $50,700 of county funding. Commissioners established the Overhills Park Water and Sewer District, which covers the Overhills Park Subdivision located just north of Spring Lake near the intersection of East Manchester Road and Highway 210, in 2009 after failing septic tanks were reported. Community Development Has New Director Interim Cumberland County Manager Amy Cannon has appointed Sylvia McLean the county's Community Development Director. McLean has worked in the department since 2001 and was serving as its business manager when she was appointed director on April 7. McLean's professional experience includes more than 13 years working for City of Raleigh Community Development in administration. She also previously worked for Harnett County government. A Harnett County native, McLean holds professional certifications as a Certified Budget and Evaluation Officer and Housing Development Finance professional through the N.C. Local Government Budget Association and the National Development Council. She has also completed certification training through U.S. Department of HUD in Financial Management and Governance, in addition to community development and finance officer training and coursework at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government. "I'm looking forward to leading Community Development as we continue to provide needed services to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Cumberland County," McLean said.
