It is easy to do if we do not press for- ward and overcome obstacles placed in our paths. Here is a pic- ture of one who settled for less. Proverbs 24:30-34 says, "I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; and there it was, all overgrown with thorns; its surface was covered with nettles; its stone wall was broken down. When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction: a little sleep, a little slumber, a little fold- ing of the hands to rest; so shall your poverty come like a prowler, and your need like an armed man." The potential of the vineyard was there but he settled for less. I think of another verse in the Bible that describes a man’s pursuit in knowing God. Paul describes it this way in Philippians 3:12, "Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me." Paul was not complacent. He did not settle for less. He pressed forward to obtain a goal. Paul’s goal was to know the Lord Jesus in every aspect that He could be known. McClatchy Newspapers FIND YOUR OWN PATH The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: There are two basic ways to know what the true reli- gion is. The first is to let another or others tell you. In most cases their response will be "my" reli- gion is the only true reli- gion. Support for their dog- matic assertion will come in the form of fear-based notions, which purport that you are a sinner, that you will never get to heaven and that the only way for you to be "saved" is by fol- lowing the doctrines and creeds of their religion. The list of persuasions goes on and on. The more a person, religion or pro- nouncement holds to the arrogant position of pro- Have you grown weary? Have you given up? Have you lost your drive to excel? Are you living in self pity? These are important ques- tions to ask ourselves. It says in 2 Peter 1:3 that God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness, in our knowledge of Him. Are you living in that full- ness? Are you pursuing your relationship with the Lord? Are you grow- ing spiritually? The potential is limitless, yet have you settled for less? We all have an eternal said, "She wants everyone to remember that the best is yet to come." destiny. There is the story of the elderly woman who was getting ready to die. She told her pastor that she wanted to be buried with a fork in her hand. He asked her why and with a smile she explained to him that whenever there was a family dinner, the host would say, "Now save your fork for dessert." On the day of her funeral, sure enough, there she lay in her casket with a fork in her hand. Everyone was ask- ing, "What’s up with the fork?" The pastor told her story and then he claiming it is "the only true one," the greater the proof is that it isn't. The second way for you to know what is the true religion is to personalize it and do research to discov- er what the true religion is for you. Read the state- ment of beliefs, acquaint yourself with the history and determine whether the theology inspires you, empowers you and res- onates with your deepest beliefs. Your spiritual path should be one that impas- sions you, not imprisons you. It should be one that continually moves you to higher levels of joy, love, peace of mind and harmo- ny. Seek and you will find the spiritual source that is best for you. The one that truly supports your great- est happiness and highest good. Marilyn Adams GodTalk Did you know that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins? Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Have you ever accepted God’s gift for you? Is Jesus Christ your Lord and personal Savior? If not, then you have set- tled for less. With eternity before us, it is essential to con- sider our eternal destiny. Today I urge you to lay hold of what the Lord Jesus has already accom- plished for you. All we have to do is accept His promise in Romans 10:13, "For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Why set- tle for less? Marilyn Adams is a prolific writer and minister to women and to prisoners. She has received great healing in her life and she ministers what she has been given Voices of Faith: How do I know what is the true religion? FAITH LEADS TO TRUTH The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Nevada, Mo., and St. Bridget's in Rich Hill, Mo: You don't _ that's why faith is called for! I can give personal tes- timonies and historical accounts that could tip the scale toward belief in the person of Jesus Christ. But you can dismiss these pro- fessions as biased, unsub- stantiated or unreliable. That is, at a certain point you are asked to assent to these claims with an act of faith. A Catholic professes that Jesus Christ is the sav- ior of all and that knowl- edge of this truth is univer- sally accessible; i.e., this truth is accessible to you and to everyone else. We say this is possible because faith is in commu- Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff Red Bluff.... Christian faith is myste- rious, yet it resonates with our experience of the human condition. A Catholic would invite you to investigate the claims of the church to see if they speak to your heart and mind. Evidence is there, along with the reality that men and women throughout the centuries have been so cap- tivated by an encounter with Jesus that they profess him to be true. They — we — have found the truth that sets us free. Our access to this reality comes when we cease looking for undeni- able proof and make an act of faith.
