Corning police officers had been dispatched to the 1400 block of Sixth Street about 1:45 p.m. for a report of a dog attacking a woman, according to a department press release. Upon arrival a 32-year-old Corn - ing woman said she was in the backyard of her residence with her two small children when one of her neighbor's five dogs entered her yard. The woman said the pit bull be - gan growling at her and her chil- dren. After telling her children to go inside, the woman attempted to "shoo" the dog back to its own yard. Around 9:40 p.m. officers were dispatched to the Sale Lane apart - ment complex for a report of a fight in which someone had been stabbed, according to a Red Bluff Police Department press release. Officers arrived on scene and contacted a 16-year-old girl. The girl had blood on her hands and clothes, but was uninjured. Some of the state of Jefferson's most ardent supporters and or - ganizers including Mark Baird, Kayla Brown and Robert Smith took to the lectern to argue that the north state has been held hos - tage by Southern California leg- islators for too long, a 51st state could better represent the inter- ests of rural counties and a new state also would be economically feasible. Twenty-three teams took to the fairground's arena under sunny skies to honor those who have fallen to cancer and those who have survived in an event that resembles Relay for Life events held around the world. Ride for Life organizers an - nounced the event raised more than $33,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society, top- ping last year's total of $29,000. Over the past five years the event, which started as a 4-H project in 2009, has raised more than $180,000 to benefit cancer research and programs. Riders, some wearing the iconic pink of breast cancer awareness movements, and oth - ers donning more festive attire, were tasked with keeping at last one team member on the arena's track throughout the morning and afternoon. Some, like Ab - bie Kurth, visited Rebecca Lo- pez at the Locks of Love styling station to donate their hair. Kurth of Orland, a first-time Ride for Life participant, said it also was the first time she's do - nated some of her hair.
