2A – Daily News – Monday, April 11, 2011 Community people&events Kylers celebrate 65th year Please set cell phone to ‘nag’ There is a fine line between inquiring with concern how you might assist someone in her diet efforts; and braying persistent, repetitive, noisy, constant, loud- mouthed inquiries as to whether she knows what the heck she is doing. The former is labeled "being sup- portive," the latter referred to as "nagging." As examples, supportive is gen- tly and sincerely asking, "How can I help you with your diet?" Nagging is, "How’s that diet working? Should you be eating that? Wow! How many calories in that? Haven’t you had enough?" SAYS... “ Thanks for your Thanks!” We truly appreciate your words of gratitude regarding our financial assistance in spaying and neutering so many dogs and cats of our community over the past 13 years! Even though we are closing we hope that the community will continue to press forward to support prevention of unwanted litters. It will take a sincere cooperative effort by the veterinarians, County and most of all responsible pet owners, to control the cost through this depression. The stray cat issue is the main contributor to the problem and impossible to get under control without a continued effort and contribution by all three! Our last publication in this spot will be next Monday. We will continue to have our phone for contact. Jot down the number because it is not listed under PAWS. 528-8018. SPACE DONATED IN THE INTEREST OF PETS AND PET LOVERS BY: D NEWSAILY RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY Choral concert set Tuesday The California HEAT Chorus of Sweet Adelines Inter- national is having Friends and Family Night at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, at Jackson Heights Elementary School. This is an annual event where the chorus invites all friends and families to watch the dress rehearsal for the Region 12 Convention and Contest, which is being held in Reno this year. The group will be in full costume and makeup, sequins and sparkles, smiles and attitudes to perform for you and light up our way towards a magical weekend. Every spring each region throughout the world has a contest and the winners go to International Convention and Contest in the fall, which will be held in Houston, Texas. The California Heat Chorus looks forward to represent- ing friends and family, sponsors and Red Bluff as it goes to Reno the last weekend of April to compete with other Sweet Adeline sisters in Reno. Although well intended; polite support might still carry the risk that the answer is, "leave me alone." However, it is a slam-dunk assur- ance that a series of harassing, pushy questions blasted in Gatling gun point-blank, rapid-fire succes- sion promises one will receive that same reply, albeit with exclamation points and several choice expletives spicing up the retort. Supportive infers the receiver knows what to do, but might peri- odically need assistance. (Don’t we all?) Nagging implies he is an incompetent, ignorant, bumbling boob — adrift without constant instruction; and since pushing someone who desires no assistance (rightly or wrongly) is a guarantee that the end result will be no place fun; might as well avoid the journey completely. However, if requested — and therein lies the rub — nagging might have value, or so believes a website whose goal is to keep one on the straight and narrow. Requir- ing nothing more than a cell phone, internet con- nection, and a willingness to be annoyed from afar, it can send text message reminders to keep you on task. Deciding to inspect fur- ther, I created a profile. "How much do you weigh?" queried the on- line form. This presents obstacle one; do I answer honestly? Even the DMV thinks I weigh 147 pounds; must I now confess to a nameless society of cyber-food-cops my most personal number? On the other hand, I am requesting guid- ance; if I "creatively address" the issue, recording a more complimen- tary weight, it might not assist me. Already, the stress is enough to cause me to eat. Brushing fear aside, I bravely answer with truth- fulness: "185 pounds." "What would you like to accom- plish?" asks the questionnaire. Uh, duh. From the pull down menu, I select "Lose Weight." "How much?" "Ten pounds." "Ten, is that it? Not very moti- vated are you?" (OK, I made that part up.) "By when?" it asks. I supply a date. "How often would you like to be reminded?" The service can prompt daily or weekly. I opt for "every day" and select, "call repeatedly until I respond." Later that evening, my cell phone alerts me to a message, "How’s your diet going?" Scott Q. Marcus I glance at the com- munication and return to watching American Idol. Undeterred, the commu- niqué repeats shortly thereafter; again, ignored. It refuses sur- render; repeating two more times, until — becoming annoyed, and wondering why I got involved in this experi- ment — it dawns on me: I can push the "off" but- ton on my cell-phone and continue eating. Now, if only there was a way to do that with pushy co-workers or family members, we might be on to something.
