April is also the month for The Stoneybrook Steeplechase (read more on page 60) and we are eagerly looking forward to a new event for our area, The Fayetteville Duck Derby, which is featured on page 67. It doesn’t matter how many years I’ve been in Fayetteville, spring every year is like a surprise party. Azaleas, dogwoods, Bradford pears, tulips, irises, wisteria and rhododendrons all compete to outdo each other. For a few weeks in the springtime my backyard looks like a crayon box — and I love it. This is a glorious month and I honestly do not think there is anywhere in the world more beautiful than Fayetteville about the featured family based businesses on p.20 to see how they began and continue to thrive. Did you know the bark of the Dogwood tree was an early toothache treatment I 10 | April • 2011 and it was a “toothbrush”? Today these trees are most popular because of their radiant blooms, strong root systems and because they bud very young. The same can be said about Grady Bowman p.28, a multi-talented Fayetteville born and raised artist who took his dancing machismo to the Broadway stage. The weather is mild, the trees and azaleas are in bloom, and over-the-counter allergy medicine sales are up. Whether it’s Fourth Friday or the Dogwood Festival, everyone wants to be outdoors.
