"We're looking forward to meeting you and getting you safely on the road again" Jeff and Nonda By Jane Finley (Gypsy Jane) writer * artist * teacher * traveler Gertie and Eric's Hummingbird Haven ... NOT! A True Quartzite Story Gertie and Eric are two of my danc- ing friends I met at Silly Al's a few years back. Last time I saw them, Eric could hardly wait to tell me this story, with Gertie his wife adding the details. Beaming with delight, Eric started in. According to him, it was one of those EXTREMELY windy March days. He and Gertie were driving back to Quartzsite from Parker when they noticed a tiny something in the road... and it was moving. They pulled over to investigate and found the tiniest of creatures- a baby hum- mingbird. Apparently, the fierce wind had blown the nest right out of the tree. The baby, too young to fly, was helpless and wandered into the road. Not knowing what else to do, the couple took it home. They found the right-size box, and Gertie made a mixture of sugar wa- ter. The outlook was grim, but they had hope. After all, they were "ex- perienced" bird caretakers. Some years back, a neighbor had asked them to care for three orphaned robins. The neighbors had cats and were concerned about the birds' welfare. Those robins hung around Eric and Gertie for a long time, but once they left, they don't think they ever came back...but then they can't be sure; it's hard to tell one robin from another when robins return each spring. But I digress…So back to the hummingbird saga. Eric and Gertie filled an eye dropper with the hum- mingbird food and poked it through a hole in the box. Well, the baby hummingbird took to it like gang- busters! It perked right up, and Eric and Gertie breathed a sigh of relief. Things were going along swim- mingly, and of course, they told all the neighbors who were delighted Traveling with Gypsy Jane with the story. Needless to say, the hummingbird had MANY visitors, all oohing and ahhing over the baby, while Eric and Gertie, the proud "parents" looked on and contin- ued to hope. One of the neighbors said he had some humming- bird food and donated it to the cause. Well, the hummingbird loved it! He drank and drank. Then all three (Eric, Gertie, and the hummingbird), went about their business. Later when Eric and Gertie checked on the hummingbird, it was on its back with its feet in the air. NOT GOOD! They thought the worst, but when Eric gently stroked the bird, it began to come around. It got more and more lively until time for the next feeding. The hummingbird LOVED that neighbor's humming- bird food. Eric and Gertie thought all was well...until a little while later when they again discovered the baby flat on its back with its feet in the air AGAIN! They thought: WHAT IS GOING ON? After much discussion and tossing around different reasons, they decided the hummingbird food, a liquid, must have fermented. Ap- parently, the hummingbird wasn't dead...just dead DRUNK! For fear of being charged with contribut- ing to the delinquency of a minor, Eric and Gertie returned the humming- bird drink to the owners with thanks, along with a great story. I saw Eric and Gertie again at Silly Al's last night. After eating St. Patrick's Day dinner of corn beef and cabbage at the Yacht Club, they had returned home to check on the hummingbird before listening to the great music of Ern Cunningham at Silly Al's. They reported all was fine: The hummingbird was back on its feet. They're not quite sure how this story will end, but they're hoping the hummingbird will mature enough to fly out of the box. Meanwhile, they say to everyone: PLEASE, NO MORE BIRDS. POSTSCRIPT: A HAPPY ENDING! A few days later, the hummingbird flew the coop! JaneFinley@yahoo.com
