aLPHa Xi page 2 I n august, alpha Xi alumnus and founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation (www.foldsofhonor. org) Major Dan "Noonan" Rooney '95 accepted a check at the Folds headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from alpha Xi seniors Jordan Pfeiffer '14 and Connor Terry '14. This check represented the proceeds from the efforts of the active chapter, along with the support of the alpha Xi alumni, during Derby Day week. The money was used to set up a scholarship at the Folds of Honor Foundation in the name of UsaF Major Richard "Rocky" Claflin, Alpha Xi '61, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. This scholarship is in honor of all of the alpha Xi men who have served our country in the armed forces. Right: Major Dan "Noonan" Rooney '95 accepts a check at the Folds headquarters from Alpha Xi seniors Jordan Pfeiffer '14 and Connor Terry '14 with the proceeds raised during Derby Day week. M y first contact with sigma Chi was at the University of Tulsa. i was a legacy through my older brother, who strongly influenced my decision to go sigma Chi. i spent my last two years at the University of Kansas and was welcomed into the house right away. i can't tell you how affirming it was to have been adopted into my class the way i was. it was a diverse group from all over Kansas and was filled with outstanding students, athletic guys, creative types, men of great faith, and fun partiers. i'm very proud to have been a part of that class. They've now experienced a great deal of success in their lives and are a tremendous credit to the fraternity. My years at alpha Xi were filled with the pleasure of getting to know lots of talented, accomplished brothers. i had many role models who set high goals for themselves. They made me want to work harder to become a better person. i feel i've achieved more in my life than i would have if i had just lived in a dorm or an apartment, and i've always felt indebted to the chapter because of that. i graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in business and finance in 1977. i spent my career in banking at the Department of Treasury and spent my last nine years in Washington, D.C., as director for large bank supervision. after graduation i left Kansas and have spent 30+ years living in different places around the country. i have had the chance to return for reunions and kept up with brothers from my class, but i was not able to get involved with the chapter until i retired and moved back to Kansas City. i joined the House Corporation Board in 2010 and have served on the chapter's advisory Board since it was formed in 2011. i have two goals for alpha Xi Chapter. One is to strengthen our relationship with the national Fraternity. sigma Chi has a number of programs to help the undergraduate chapters reach their full potential and we need to start taking advantage of that. My second goal is to encourage the active brothers to hold each other accountable. We are a character-building organization and it works best when brothers work together to help each other live up to the Jordan standard. My wife, susan, and i have two children, Richard and anne. Rich was initiated into sigma Chi at Embry Riddle aeronautical University. The day i pinned his badge on him was one of the proudest in my life.
