Born December 18, 1928 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Farris Yelton and Cledar Hutchins Yelton. Reid worked in the saw mills when he was younger and then worked for Spindale Mills and Cone Mills for over 30 years before retire- ment. He was a member of Westminster Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman and hunter. In addition to his par- ents, he was preceded in death by sister, Irene Yelton Tessnair; two brothers, George Yelton and William Mills Yelton and two grandchildren, Carol Renee Yelton and Tammy Tessnair Lee. Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years, Daisy Walker Yelton; nine children, Wayne Yelton, Carol Tessnair and hus- band, Thurman, Annie Head and husband, Issac, Ronald Yelton, Marie Henderson and husband, Harold, Denice Foote and husband, Russell, Pinkie Tessnair, Bill Yelton and wife, April and Charles Yelton and wife, Kelly all of Rutherfordton; sis- ter Dolly Jean Tessnair and husband, William of Forest City; twenty-eight grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grand- children. Funeral services were conducted at the Westminster Baptist Church with Reverend Hubert Street officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorial dona- tions are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801 Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. RALPH C. ROPER R a l p h R o p e r , age 78, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Monday, February 3, 2014. Born December 28, 1935 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late John William Roper and Euneeda Dills Roper. Ralph worked for Cone Mills-Florence Plant for over 30 years before his retirement and for the Gilkey Convenience Center in his retirement years. He was a member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fox hunting and especially sitting on the front porch in his chair next to his pet Basset hound, Droopy. In addition to his par- ents, he was preceded in death by two broth- ers, Alfred Roper and Kenneth Roper and two sisters, Katherine Padgett and Louise Hawkins. Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years, Betty Wright Roper; son, Randy Roper and wife, Brenda of Rutherfordton; brother, James Roper and wife, Louise of Rutherfordton. He is also survived by three grand- children, Justin Roper, Bubba Bowen and wife, Tina and Pam Carver and husband, Bradley; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Carver, Todd Carver, Caleb Bowen and Caitlyn Bowen. A memorial ser- vice was conducted at Mountain Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Charles McClure officiat- ing. Inurnment took place in the church cemetery. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. CATHY LYNN SMITH Cathy Lynn S m i t h , age 57, of Rutherford C o u n t y , passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Born May 22, 1956 in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of John Edwards, Sr., who resides in Ellenboro, and the late Betty Jones Edwards. Cathy worked for Cone Mills for over twelve years and also as a cashier for Wal-Mart for several years. She enjoyed flower gardening, reading and her pet dog, Pudgey. In addition to her mother, she was preced- ed in death by daughter, Kimberly Dawn Mode; sis- ter, Wilma Diane Bridges and nephew, Kenneth Edwards, Jr. Besides her father, survivors include her husband of 24 years, Jim Smith; daugh- ter, Crystal Smith and companion, Wyman Buzhardt of Lexington, SC; step-daughter, Lisa Smith of Conover and step-son, Jim Smith, Jr. of Hendersonville; two brothers, John Edwards, Jr. and wife, Linda and Kenneth Edwards and wife, Brenda all of Ellenboro; sister, Karen Keeter also of Ellenboro; brother-in-law, Rodney Smith and wife, Donna of Mars Hill, NC. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jeffery Smith, Amber Smith, Sara Stanley, and Deidre Smith; great-grandchild, Jaiden Kimbrell and niece, Leann Bridges among numerous nieces and nephews. A service of remem- brance was conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel. WESTYN PRIER SMITH W e s t y n P r i e r S m i t h , infant son of Jennifer Earls and Chad Smith, of Mooresboro, NC went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Westyn was born on January 28, 2014 in Cleveland County, NC and touched the lives of his family during his brief time with them. He was the joy of their hearts. In addition to his par- ents, survivors include his five brothers, Trent Smith, Durant Smith, Rylan Smith, Blake Greene and Austin Morris all of the home; paternal grand- parents, Wesley Smith of Cliffside and Rita Webb of Forest City; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Jolynne Earls of Mooresboro; three uncles, Clint Smith of Forest City, Joshua Earls and Rudy Earls both of Mooresboro and aunt, Angie Phillips and husband, Jason of Green Hill. A memorial service was conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Jack Crain officiating. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. WILLARD NARCE BAILEY Willard Narce Bailey, 83, of Forest City, passed away on Sunday, February 02, 2014. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on March 08, 1930, a son of the late Void and Eva Dobbins Bailey. He was retired from Snyder Mills and W.N.C. Wholesale Florist. Mr. Bailey was also a U.S. Army Veteran having served in The Korean War. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Forest City and the Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved music. In addition to his par- ents, he is preceded in death by three bothers, Theo Bailey, Marchel Bailey and Gene Bailey. He is survived by his wife, Gaynell Owens Bailey; two daughters, Teresa Collins and husband Gary of Rutherfordton and Debbie Brewer and hus- band Rev. Rick Brewer of Rutherfordton; two sis- ters, Eloise Bailey Kanipe of Cliffside and Jerene Bailey Landreth and hus- band Horton of Cliffside; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A Celebration of his life was held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Forest City with the Rev. Bob Philbeck and Rev. Kyle Turner offici- ating. Burial followed at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors accord- ed by the Rutherford County Honor Guard and Masonic Rites accorded by the Cliffside Masonic Lodge #460.
