The speaker's topic pertained to what makes a difference when dealing with families and individuals who have lost a loved one. He made an important statement which was, "It is the heart a person has for others who are hurting that will make the difference." Helping families is not about wearing a nice suit and driving a new vehicle. It is not about being in front of a crowd or being "somebody" in the community. When you wade through all the externals, the internal motivation to being a funeral director is serving people with a compassionate heart. A person who only has a professional mindset and cannot relate to hurting people or thinks that the business is from 9 to 5 will not be effective. As the funeral industry changes to meet the needs of our culture, the funeral director who can weep internally when dealing with a family who is heartbroken will remain relevant. I am not sure how or what the "funeral business" may look like in 10 or 20 years, but I do know that the need to care for people will never change.
