Dear Annie: I read the letter from ''Furious and Concerned,'' whose physician cousin often treats and gives medication to family members. The Medical Board of California does not prohibit physicians from treating family members, but does require that any prescribing of medications (and giving samples is indeed prescribing) be accompanied by an appropriate history and physical examination. It also requires that adequate medical records be kept of the treatment, the same as for any other patient. In California, the actions described would put that physician at risk of losing his license for unprofessional conduct. I don't know what state this cousin lives in, but ''Furious'' should advise her relatives to stop asking him for free medical care. We all receive such requests, and they are often difficult to refuse. She also could send the physician a copy of this reply, as he may be unaware that his actions are putting his license at risk. — Concerned MD in California Annie's Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Tips to avoid 'Turkey Flu' next holiday season For years, Liz Tarditi's mother tried to kill her family with turkey. Not intentionally, of course, but invariably sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas someone in the family developed flu-like symptoms. Mother blamed it on the weather and whatever influenza was going around, but the truth is they suffered from mild food poisoning that required weeks to fully recover. Tarditi, a professional personal chef, says the way to avoid "the flu" and make sure the holidays are as healthy as they are happy is to practice safe food handling techniques when preparing the Thanksgiving turkey. Conquer the bacteria. Most poultry contain small amounts of salmonella bacteria that, when ingested, can result in a variety of afflictions all the way from slight illness to death. The way to kill the salmonella in food is with heat and on surfaces with an antibacterial agent. Make it yourself. Every kitchen needs an effective antibacterial solution. But don't spend $6 for a 12ounce bottle of cleaner. Make it yourself: One gallon of 70 F (cool) water plus one teaspoon of liquid bleach. Any warmer and the bleach evaporates; more bleach will harm some surfaces and fabrics. Don't get obsessive, just measure carefully and stick with this perfect, dirtcheap recipe that will not harm wood, paint, marble or fabric. Sanitize liberally. Regularly sanitize all kitchen surfaces with this bleach water, particularly those that may have come in contact with raw so you think it's fully cooked because the bird is. Hunt Everyday Cheapskate Draft document issued for Trinity River rehab WEAVERVILLE – The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a Draft Environmental Assessment/Initial Study on the Trinity River 2014 Channel Rehabilitation Project sites Bucktail and Lower Junction City. The proposed project is designed to enhance aquatic habitat quality and complexity through construction of slow water rearing habitat for juvenile salmon and steelhead, reconnection of the floodplain with the river, revegetation of native plants, and placement of in-river wood structures to react with flow and create/maintain habitat. Reclamation and the Bureau of Land Management, federal co-lead agencies, and the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, California state lead agency, are working together to inform the public about the proposed project. A public meeting to describe the proposed project and to receive public input will be held on 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Trinity County Public Library, 351 N. Main St., Weaverville. The Bucktail site is located on the mainstem Trinity River, just upstream of the Bucktail Bridge near Lewiston, Calif. The Lower Junction City site is located in Junction City on the mainstem Trinity River, just downstream of the Dutch Creek Bridge.
