Justin Harper Some people just have it in their soul: An eternal longing to make sounds come together in a creative way. No matter the instrument or the song, music interweaves itself into every aspect of their life. I'm sure he has a whistle or hum as he delivers mail through rain, sleet and snow or even sings a song to his buzzing friends as he tends to his bees, Sandy Carlton can't get away from music. Songwriter, harmonica player, fiddler, bass player, and the list goes on. You may recognize this name from the acclaimed jam days of the J. Justin Harper "Peelers Mill Band" or even more recently from the songwriting team, "Mama Said." His early musical influences were born from hot nights on the porch listening to his grandmother play organ, piano, and harmonica on gospel songs. Also, falling asleep listening to blues music radio from Ernie's Record Mart of Memphis, TN has permeated music down to the soul. Carlton shares, "I started piano lessons at the age of 8. I wanted to play piano in my grandmother's style (southern gospel/ragtime style), but I was told by my parents that I needed to learn classical music first. I cheated every chance I got and played the blues and gospel." His life changed forever when his cousin from New York brought him a copy of "The Freewheeling Bob Dylan." From that moment on, SANDY CARLTON Sandy Carlton became a songwriter who played guitar and sang. He's wrote songs about all sorts of places in NC and beyond, as well as having music published and performed by other bands and artists. The advice he has for young musicians is, "Learn all you can. Get to know all the musicians you can. Keep an open mind. Remember that music is no big deal." SUNSET OPEN 5:30 DRIVE-IN THEA TRE 704-434-7782 • HWY. 74 W.
