Candlelight Page 2 Great Year to be a Pike is always a to a Pike, but Itgentlemen thisgreat daygreatbeyearfall 2012a was a to be Pike! Coming off of an exciting semester with many positives, we wanted to do more and do better in the spring semester and we were able to accomplish this task. A few notable areas of spring were academics, Grand Prix, philanthropy, and athletics. ACADEMICS Purdue President Mitch Daniels with Chapter members in front of Chapter House. In fall 2012 the Chapter finished with a 2.47 GPA, putting us at 33rd out of 40 fraternities on campus. The brothers recognized this major shortcoming and, with the installment and adjustments made to the tutoring program, the Chapter went from 33rd to 12th overall with a 2.86 GPA in spring. We believe we have found what works and will continue to make strides forward. GRAND PRIX Purdue President Mitch Daniels doing a Q&A session after having dinner at the Chapter House. Patrick Kroll '15, Mike Jones '15, Chris Young '16, Peter Martucci '15, Joe Schraffenberger '13, Grand Prix drivers and crew chiefs at the awards banquet. We were able to run two karts in this year's race. This was a huge advantage because one of the karts had mechanical failure early in the race, leaving us with one for the final duration. But the driver of this kart, Chris Young '16, prevailed as he finished in third place! He finished as the number one fraternity kart, beating Sigma Chi and SigEp. PHILANTHROPY With the inaugural Pike Fireman's Challenge philanthropy last fall, we wanted to continue our philanthropic endeavors into the spring with two events. First was Pikes for Strikes, a bowling tournament that allowed fraternities and sororities to participate and raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Lafayette. This was one of the first spring philanthropies we have done in several years so we were excited that it was a success. We also hosted an Easter egg hunt with the Boys and Girls Club. Brothers went to the Boys and Girls Club and hung out with more than 70 kids, played games and enjoyed an Easter egg hunt. It was a great event to get connected with the Lafayette community and give back. We hope to foster a deeper relationship with the Boys and Girls Club and continue to serve them. Spring semester was great for Pikes and the success continued as we went into the summer months. At The Academy, Pike University's leadership conference, Beta Phi Chapter was able to take home awards and acknowledgments. Beta Phi won the programming award for having the best alumni relations! This is simply a boast to all of you who continue to give back to the Chapter and set the standard for undergraduate members for the future. Along with this award Beta Phi was in the running for the Most Improved Chapter. Although we did not win, the positive recognition from National means they are noticing what we are accomplishing and are aware that Beta Phi will continue to excel and be an award-winning chapter. With a full house of highly motivated members, Beta Phi Chapter looks to continue its streak of excellence in accomplishing our goals. When I took office as SMC, I told the members that excellence would be our standard and that we would win, and win a lot. I am pleased to say that I am delivering on this promise, and I can only see positives for the fall semester. I hope this news has made you as excited as I am to be a Pike, and that you will reach out to the Chapter to hear about more of the exciting goals we have set for this year. ATHLETICS We continued our winning athletics record as well, finishing in second place overall. Pike was able to take home several championships and had at least four teams participating in each sport, making our presence known in the athletic arena. With better athletes being recruited in each class, we will continue to win athletics and get that first place finish.
