The Oracle Alumnus Joins House Corporation to Help Promote Strong Chapter F or many men, joining a fraternity is about being a part of something bigger than themselves. Membership offers an opportunity to build relationships, give back to the community, and learn from successful individuals who came before. Michael Blue '02 experienced all of this and more when he joined Lambda Chi Alpha at Indiana University. "It was about being a part of something larger than yourself that had a positive impact in the community. Being from a small rural area in Indiana and rushing as a freshman helped give the campus a feel I was more accustomed to by becoming a member of the fraternity. Being a member pushed me to get more involved not only within the fraternity but on campus as well." While an undergraduate, Michael served the fraternity as the alumni chairman and secretary. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Kelly School of Business in business law and marketing. He is currently an account manager with MBX Systems in Libertyville, IL. "The leadership opportunities and the experience of managing an organization I had while in the Chapter prepared me for my future career. I also gained confidence from the leadership and guidance of the other members." He said it was the general camaraderie of the members that he appreciates most. "We enjoyed mainly hanging out at the house. Looking back, it was nice to enjoy that time together when we didn't have as many responsibilities that come after graduating." Those friendships have lasted throughout the years; although he admits that distance has made it harder. "Most of my groomsmen were pledge brothers of mine. Most are living in the Indianapolis area, and I'm in Chicago so it makes getting together often hard, but we have stayed connected through phone and e-mail." Michael has also stayed connected with the Chapter by serving on the house corporation. "I am now in a place personally and professionally that I can take a more active role in the Chapter. The Chapter is strong with a lot of good guys who have the house headed in the right direction." He remembers as an undergraduate the importance of alumni involvement. "I remember John Edgeworth '80 and Kel Preston '82 always coming back for Homecoming and staying interested in the Chapter years after they graduated. I want to continue their example to support the Chapter. Hopefully with the exciting things we are doing other alumni will reconnect with the Chapter and get involved. We appreciate any and all involvement, and it is always nice to meet brothers from other generations and would invite those who have lost touch with the chapter to reconnect." Michael and his wife, Sara, live in Volo, Illinois, and have a 3-year-old daughter, Riley, and a dog named Indy. He enjoys travelling with his family, riding his motorcycle, and smaller hobby woodworking projects around the house.
