PAT MITCHELL – MODELS OF ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SEPTEMBER ROUNDTABLE WELCOMES Dr. Pat Mitchell, Adjunct Professor at Appalachian State University, discusses best practices and models of economic development at the next Rutherford Roundtable. The meeting is sched- uled Wed., Sept. 15, 1:30pm at Rutherford County Offi ce Building located on N. Main Street, Rutherfordton. Funded by a grant to The Roundtable from the N.C Department of Commerce and Appalachian Regional Commission, Dr. Mitchell’s presentation will include various models for economic de- velopment and offer opportunity for questions and answers. Mitchell who formerly has served as a faculty member in the political science department at East Carolina University currently is Director of Economic Development at Ashe County Govern- ment. She comes to the Roundtable not as in her capacity as economic developer for Ashe County but as an academic clinician who has been engaged in various elements of economic development for 30 years. She received her doctorate in public administration and fi nance from the University of Georgia in 2001. She is a member of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), continues to teach on the faculty of both ASU and East Carolina University, is a member of the Board of Directors of the NC Rural Center, Chair of the Advantage West Local Developers Advisory Council, and is an Advisor to the UNC– Chapel Hill School of Government Community and Economic Development Program. Frankie McWhorter who coordinates The Roundtable meetings says, “Several months ago as the group began to explore ways to utilize the funds made available by Department of Commerce for capacity building and looking at best practices in community and economic development. Several Roundtable participants suggested that it would be helpful to know how other communities are doing the work. Last month Rick Davis presented information on how Graham County through the G.R.E.A.T organization is positively impacting that community.” Rutherford Roundtable meetings are scheduled on the 3rd Wednesdays of each month and are open to all interested per- sons. Special meetings and presentations are scheduled as opportunity to learn more about best practices and community issues arise. Some programs are funded in part by the N. C. Department of Commerce Offi ce of Rural Program Development through grant funds made available from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Upcoming programs of The Rutherford Roundtable include NC Rural Center for Economic Development Vice President Patrick Woodie as special guest on Oct. 20. Woodie will discuss Rural Center programs and grants. On Nov. 17, Dr. Vaughan Grisham, Ex. Director of the George McLean Center for Community Development at Ole Miss and author of TUPELO; THE EVOLUTION OF A COMMUNITY, and HAND IN HAND: COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT leads a workshop for The Roundtable and other interested persons on how ordinary people do extraordinary things.
