A L P H A N U C H A P T E R O F B E TA T H E TA P I • L AW R E N C E , K A N S A S • S P R I N G 2 0 2 4 Alpha Nu's Letter I n the realm of fraternity life, there's a cornerstone value that not only defines our identity but also sets us apart—the value of being a gentleman. For Alpha Nu Chapter, this principle is not just a lofty ideal; it's a lived reality that permeates every aspect of our brotherhood. As we delve into another core value of our fraternity, "Betas are gentlemen," it's crucial to understand how we uphold this commitment, particularly in our interactions with women. In my role as executive director, I have the pleasure of observing this core value on a regular basis. Sometimes I see it with my own eyes when I am at the house or attending events, but usually I hear it from parents who provide feedback and anecdotes of how they have observed their young men continue to mature through their experience at Alpha Nu. As parents of Alpha Nu men (Tom '19 and Adam '21), Christa and I have our own pride in the gentlemen we saw emerge from our sons' time at Alpha Nu. Of course, we did our best to instill such a value during their pre-college years, but there is something very powerful about being surrounded by 100 or so of your peers who are constantly setting examples. Adam's Thoughts To round out some perspective on this core value, I asked my son Adam if he would share his perspective on "Betas are gentlemen" in his own words. Here is what he had to say: "From the moment a freshman walks through the doors of the Hutt, they are immersed in an environment where respect for women is not only expected but also celebrated. The upperclassmen in the house can lead by example on how to interact with their female counterparts on the KU campus, and it is through fostering this value that the Hutt has developed the distinguished reputation it has with women. Outside of interactions on campus, moments of chivalry are observed through relationships with girlfriends, classmates, and family members that serve as a blueprint for the new members. Central to our efforts is the recognition that fostering a culture of respect and equality isn't a one-time endeavor but an ongoing journey. We understand that while societal norms and attitudes evolve, the value of being a gentleman will always hold steady. One of the most powerful ways we demonstrate our commitment to being gentlemen is through our everyday interactions. Whether it's treating women with dignity and courtesy at social events, standing up against misogynistic language or behavior, or simply listening attentively to their voices and perspectives, we recognize that our actions speak louder than words. By embodying the values of respect and empathy in our interactions, we not only honor the legacy of our fraternity but also contribute to building a more respectful society. One unique aspect of our fraternity experience that reinforces the value of treating women with respect is our tradition of living alongside our beloved housemom, Mom Moss. She is more than just a caretaker; she's a guiding presence who imparts invaluable wisdom and instills in us the importance of respect, courtesy, and chivalry. Her influence extends far beyond the day-to-day operations of the house; she serves as a living embodiment of the values we hold dear. Mom Moss teaches us the art of being gentlemen in the truest sense. From holding doors open to offering a helping hand, practicing active listening, and showing genuine empathy, Mom Moss' presence reminds us that small acts of kindness and consideration can make a world of difference. Through her example, we learn that being a gentleman isn't about grand gestures but rather consistently demonstrating thoughtfulness and respect in our interactions. The value of being a gentleman isn't just a slogan for Alpha Nu Chapter of Beta Theta Pi; it's a guiding principle that shapes our actions, defines our character, and sets us apart as leaders in our community."
