BETTERMENT OF OUR BROTHERS Mike Underwood '79 Keeps Growing with Alpha Tau Omega the Alpha Omegan p. 2 H aving spent most of his life on a military base, Mike Underwood '79 had a narrow perspective of the civilian world; college was his chance to change that. His father recommended he look at UF fraternities, as he and his best friend, Ronnie Jenkins, were SAE members at UVA. Mike connected with Ronnie's son, Mike Jenkins '77—and after meeting a few more Brothers, he knew ATΩ was the right choice. Spending time with the Alpha Omega membership at socials and living in the chapter house helped Mike broaden his worldview. "ATΩ allowed me to see and share in the experiences of as many Brothers as I chose," he said. Once Mike realized his pre-med plans weren't working out, he switched his major to building construction, joining several Brothers who supported one another in their studies; this proved to be the best professional decision of his life. Mike worked at two different companies before starting his own business in 1985, and M.L. Underwood Construction has grown steadily in general contracting and commercial development across Florida ever since. The company's experience includes medical and law office buildings, multifamily housing, churches, schools, and much more. Mike also serves on the board of Mainstreet Community Bank of Florida in DeLand, and he is an expert witness for several law firms in the state regarding construction litigation. His youngest daughter manages his commercial properties, including Blue Moon Yoga and Fitness in Ormond Beach. Along the way, Mike continues to serve on Alpha Omega's Board of Directors. He joined in 1990 after frequently being consulted on construction issues, realizing he could help with fire marshal inspections, among other tasks. "Over the years, I stayed on the board to help manage our changing environment and share my past experiences— trying to blend old values and customs with current times," he explained. "I just like being around ATΩ." Mike has also been around Alpha Omega frequently in his career; collaborating on projects and sharing business intel with brothers has equally enriched their professional lives. He also visits local Brothers regularly and has enjoyed many vacations with them through the years, both with families and just Brothers. "My most valuable relationships are with God, my wife and family, and ATΩ Brothers," he said. "I am forever grateful to share a lifelong brotherhood that is second to none. ATΩ will be a resource and blessing to you for your entire life." Mike lives in Ormond Beach, Florida, and you can reach him at mike@mlunderwoodconstruction.com.
