ith a grandfather in Beta and his father
(Graham "Mac" '64) in FIJI, Tom
Walker '92 knew early he wanted to be in a
Fraternity. As the college years approached, he
decided to follow his father to Pi Deuteron.
Joining that group of Brothers was one of the
best decisions Tom has ever made. For four
years, his pledge class enjoyed many great
times together. That included their pledge class
walkout to Boulder, Colorado, as well as a senior
walkout where they sailed to the Bahamas.
"I came from Pennsylvania and knew no one.
Meeting an entirely new group of people shaped
my life for the better," Tom said. "It also
shaped many of my professional choices."
Tom earned his degree in advertising from KU
and started at an agency in Chicago, moving
later to New York City. From there, a client
at UNICEF USA was looking for a Creative
Director and offered Tom the job. This became
his first non-profit role, and he hasn't looked
back since.
Now, as Executive Creative Director of
UNICEF USA, Tom uses his marketing
skills to help rally the American public to the
cause of children. This has included traveling
and meeting with Syrian refugee families
in Lebanon, and helping members of the
indigenous Wayuu Tribe in Columbia provide
drinking water to their dry homelands.
"This has truly been a dream job—I get to
use my expertise to do good things in the
world," Tom said. "I learned the importance
of philanthropy at FIJI, especially from the
upperclassmen, and my path to UNICEF came
in large part from my time as a Phi Gam."
Tom is grateful for his years in Pi Deuteron
and hopes Brothers continue to enjoy their
collegiate years. "We're all lucky to have had
the FIJI experience. We should us what we
learn in the house to give something back when
we can."
Tom lives in New York City and can be reached at twigswalker@gmail.com.
