THE LION TATTLER O ver 35 Illinois Betas met up on September 22, 2023, for the 41st annual Phi Alpha Golf Outing. Alumni from the '70s and '80s were joined by three members of the class of 2012 for golf at the Lake of the Woods course in Mahomet, Illinois. The winners of the 18-hole, four-man scramble event at 8 under par was the "Orange and Blue" team: Tim Petry '81, Bob Petry '79, Tom Donlan '79, and Doug Fink '77. Brother Tim Petry carded a natural eagle on the 15th hole to edge out the defending champion "Class of 1987." Following the golf outing, the participants returned to 211 E. Prize winners included Jon Theeke '87 (closest to the hole), Jerry Gust '78 (longest drive), and Paul Wieck '79 (longest putt). Others were recognized for their many years as members of the fraternity. On football Saturday, 12 brothers played a 9-hole stroke-play event at the Atkins Golf Club in Urbana. Gregg Werner '77 captured the coveted Blue Jacket with a stylish 37. Brother Ed Hansen '87 hosted a pregame tailgate before the alumni witnessed the Fighting Illini football team hold off visitors, Florida Atlantic University 23-17. Thanks to the Illinois Beta Alumni Association and the PAGO committee for another great outing. A t the beginning of the 20th century, stained-glass artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany and Tiffany Studios were deeply involved in the creation of various war memorials, one of which is our beloved schoolhouse, the Levere Memorial Temple in Evanston, Illinois. The Grand Foyer contains stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany with "The Good Samaritan" depicted in the center window, and the two side windows depict scenes from the life of William C. "Billy" Levere, Northwestern 1897, Eminent Supreme Recorder, 1912-27. The plan to construct a national headquarters for Sigma Alpha Epsilon was adopted at the 1920 Convention in St. Louis, and final plans for the building were presented at the 1928 Convention in Miami, which was met with unanimous approval. Ground was broken on June 22, 1929, and the Levere Memorial Temple was dedicated on December 28, 1930. As part of its Eternal Light: The Sacred Stained-Glass Windows of Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibition, The Richard H. Driehaus Museum included the Levere Memorial Temple in its "Chicago's Tiffany Trail," which you may learn more about by visiting its website at driehausmuseum.org/exhibition/eternallight/tiffany-trail.
