THE LION TATTLER Sigma Alpha Epsilon Illinois Beta Housing LLC 1856 Sheridan Rd. Evanston, IL 60201-3837 Address Service Requested W hen Alex Bayer '14 joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he recalled the fraternity being similar to a startup at the time; it required attention to detail and effort to establish Illinois Beta. As an undergraduate, Alex had the opportunity to serve as social chairman. He also enjoyed spending time with his brothers and working together to better the brotherhood. "Oftentimes, several of the brothers and I would just congregate in a room and bat around ideas on how we could continue to evolve the culture in a positive way. It was what we cared about, and ultimately, we knew that our brotherhood would bear fruit over a lifetime." Alex's brothers became his lifelong friends, and as an alumnus, he has enjoyed getting together with them over the years. "We've had quite a few meetups in Los Angeles with all the brothers that have moved out there. We'll often wear our letters and skewer some hotdogs over the fire on chilly nights at the house of Brother Kevin Tosi '13. It's always a fun time (not to mention his wife makes excellent chili for her hungry guys!)." In his career, Alex works in EA product at Vimcal, which he has enjoyed. Though his paid job is in tech, he has been working on a passion project on the side with his friend and lab partner, Michael Romeo. "I've been conducting research into the enzymatic properties of Greek yogurt, with a particular focus on the lactase enzyme and the hydrolysis process (when lactase breaks down lactose into the monosaccharides glucose and galactose.) We've created a system that uses this enzymatic process to generate a small electric current, which was then used to power a toy train. At some point, we'd like to be able to help power much larger objects." In his free time, Alex enjoys going to the farmers market and creating Google Sheets workbooks with automated scripts with the help of ChatGPT, which aids him in overthinking fantasy football drafts. When he lived in L.A., he recalled "brutherboarding" with his friends. "It's not that complicated—it's surfing with two of us on the same board. I think we invented it."
