I n September 2023, two separate social functions occurred at the chapter house involving our undergraduate members and outside guests. At both events, an undergraduate male student was served alcohol and then left the house; both students needed medical attention due to excessive alcohol consumption. The alumni board has also had concerns about the condition and general treatment of the house over the last 24 months. Our chapter was identified as providing the two individuals alcohol during both occasions. The incidents were reported to the university and our national office, and our chapter was placed on interim suspension pending investigation. The national office offered a proposal to the active chapter that would keep it away from university suspension. After some consideration and consultation with the alumni board, the chapter has accepted the proposal. Here are the main points: The active chapter will not be suspended but will be on probation status for four years. They will be able to function as an active chapter but will not have voting rights at national conventions. All current actives are moved to alumni status. A membership review will be conducted to determine if current members will stay in alumni status, be moved back to active member, or be expelled. National office members as well as Gamma alumni will conduct reviews. The active chapter will be able to initiate new members under the direction of the national office. The active chapter house will be DRY (an alcohol-free facility) and will not be able to host social functions with alcohol. The alumni board is very disappointed in our chapter for what happened those two nights in September—as well as for poor behavior and abuse of the house over the past months. We wish the active chapter would have learned from previous issues at the house and not have been forced through this process. We are pleased that the actives chose the proposal from the national office rather than the possible suspension from the university and loss of our active charter status. As many of you have noted while visiting the chapter house, the alumni board is very concerned about the general condition of the building. Our goal during this time of remediation will be to build young men who want to respect and enjoy our college home as well as bring back reverence to the values of Gamma Chapter. We hope that the time of probation will provide opportunities to keep, develop, and pursue those brothers who are respectful of our chapter house and provide standards of membership. The alumni board also has concerns regarding the balance of live-in and live-out members; current balance is not optimal for the costs to maintain our home. With this probation, we anticipate live-in membership will decline in the first few years. Alumni can help tremendously by donating a monthly payment of any value that will help cover our mortgage. The alumni board will be working with the actives to help lead the chapter through this difficult time. There will be opportunities for alumni to participate in the process that the national office has put forth. If you have questions or would like to discuss the situation further, please feel free to contact me.
